I haven't had a chance to watch all of it, but nice job. I would caution on using green Loctite on the machined sleeve washers on the blade grips. If you need to remove the thrust or radial bearings, those are not going to be fun to remove!

Where can I get a Synergy towel?!  It would be great for when I begin my build early January.  Can't wait to watch the vids while I'm out of town so I will go through my build with a gameplan in mind.

These videos are not only good for Synergy owners but great for the newbs coming into hobby as well! You covered quite a bit of info that I over looked... and probably saved me a future crash. Can't wait for the electronics video. Please cover setting up Gov mode as I've not gone through that process, I'm unsure to what head speeds I should be looking for or that are recommended as an average.

Thanks again and fantastic job!

Thanks for the kind words!

This Heli will have a MSH brain on it. I would have absolutely no problem doing a governor video for the brain. If you need help setting up governor on a different system please let me know as I have set up most of them.

Awesome, I'm using CC120. My questions would be which pinion for which head speed? What gov mode am I looking for RPM mode? Should I trust the settings or RPM in CC software and is an optical tac absolutely necessary?

Also, I hope you do a vid on soldiering especially for the BEC to ESC I think I have an idea personally but would be good for others to see a pro do it :)

Can't wait.

It was mentioned on another forum that i didn't show checking the frames for square. While i am not expecting it to be an issue, it is a good idea to show this step. I will add that to the frame setup on the next video.

Thanks for the heads up Snap.

I have setup many castle ESCs and the set rpm mode is the easiest.

I don't have a castle esc on this heli, but I will pull my 750 off the shelf and try and get a video of the setup process. Will give me something to do as I am still waiting on my Brain and cyclic servos for the E6.

Soldering, sorry I am no expert at soldering. I have the advantage that my best friend is a master micro electronics technician and he solders up my connectors and batteries. I can do it, but since I have access to a pro who is always looking for excuses to come talk helicopters, I just let him do it.

There are several good videos on the subject. One piece of advice. Don't try to do it with a $20 radio shack pencil. Soldering big connectors correctly and safely requires a tool capable of maintaining consistent heat. Most pencils heat too slow. Not to say you can't get a pencil that will work, but normally the best thing to do, in my opinion of course, is get a good 100-200watt soldering station.

I hate to admit it but I have 3 people that are great at soldering so for major projects I let them do it because they have decades of experience. I can solder minor things but I'm turning to them for my connections on this helicopter.

I agree with Chris completely.  When soldering larger connectors and heavy gauge wire a soldering station is practically a must.  I use silver bead soldier which requires a temp of around 600 degrees to flow properly, a soldering pencil just won't get the job done. Having the right tools greatly reduces frustration and the likelihood of a cold soldier joint.

Another tip came up on the HF forums.

I didn't film it, but when I pulled the bolts from the various frame stand offs and bearing blocks, I put all of them into a small servo case with rubbing alcohol.  The purpose of cleaning the bolts prior to assembling is to remove any lingering machine oil and debris that can hinder the loctite's ability to hold the bolt in place.

As I said on the HF forum, when I set out to build this kit on camera, I wasn't thinking about the newer builder looking for tips to apply to any build, so I didn't think about covering some of the basics of prep.  I can see this kit is attracting ALOT of attention of newer flyers and I want to make sure this collection of videos is as in-depth and accurate as possible. I might even film a "prequel" video of sorts talking about the importance of prep, cleaning the bolts, which types of loctite to have on hand and such.

If you watch one fo the videos and think of something that I either neglected to touch on or didn't explain clearly, please let me know! i will do my best to touch on these topics when I go to put the boom and canopy on the frame for the final time.

How long do you keep them in alcohol? Ways wondered about that.
Title: Re: Synergy E5/E6 Build Video Series
Post by: Chris Sexton on December 16, 2012, 11:37:34 PM
I pulled all the bolts out of the metal and put in the alcohol.  How long it was there, can't say. By the time I had them all in the alcohol, I was starting to pull them out and dry them off.  I wipe them down and then let them air dry. Nice thing about alcohol, it evaporates fast.

Cyclic servos and FBL controller aren't in yet. Hopefully tomorrow, but might be tuesday before I get to mount electronics, might be wednesday before we see the next video.

Good news is we are almost done! Mount the servos, talk about setup, and button it up. Looking forward to it!

Thanks for following along.

Had to make an unexpected change in Cyclic servos, the RJX were delayed, so going back to plan A and running the Savox Sc-1267SG HV Cyclics like the set in my E5.

Brain came in today, so tonight we will talk about Electronics :)

Another video filmed this evening, but due to a battery failure (rather the camera guy didn't charge it  >:( ) I lost alot of time and even some film. Won't have time to edit and publish tonight.

Tonights video got through servo and motor install as well as basic FBL setup.  Should be live by noon tomorrow.

Thanks!

Gov setup and testing video is processing now. I Filmed my final electronics placement, wiring, and filmed how I went about building my main rotor head links. I don't like how the video turned out. I was off camera for most of it.  I will be redoing that part of the video tonight as well as filming the tail install and final thoughts. So when the Gov video posts later today and you notice "hey where is part 6? He skipped something" you will know why :) The Gov programming and testing is not E5 specific so I put that in a separate video entirely.

Thanks for following along! I hope this series helps answer questions!

I am getting enough requests for details on tools I use, recommend, and how to prep for a build that I will probably do a short video on prep and my tools. I am not sure though. So much of tool selection is subjective. If I do a tools video, it will be under a different topic, probably in the Setup Help forum.

Governor setup video posted. Basic setup and head leveling video processing now.

Part 6 and 7 videos are up. I am missing some footage where I talk about building the servo to swash links, not sure.  I am planning a "tools and prep" video. I will make sure I talk about the "Boto sizer" and correct link adjustments in that one.

All that is left now is to put the boom on, setup the tail and go fly! I hope to have this bird in the air tomorrow :)

Thanks for following along.

The final build video in the series is posted!

This has been a FUN build video to do. I have done a few of these in the past, but never have I had this much real time feedback and requests for more detail. Thank you guys for making this so much fun for me! I hope these videos help answer some questions without leaving many more.

There were a few topics that didn't make the cut.

1. Checking the frame for square:
This step is to be completed AFTER you assemble the entire main frame, but before you mount the skids and the boom.  Set the heli frame on a level surface. Take a small carpenters or machinist square and check to be sure the sides of the main frame are "square" or perpendicular to the table.  Make sure you check both sides of the frame. If the frame was tightened up off square, not only will some of the parts not line up correctly, the geometry of the servos, main bearings, and control rods will be compromised.

2. Proper link building and the use of a ball link sizer like the "Boto Sizer".
This didn't make the video because I quite frankly can't find mine :( I think I loaned it to my friend when he did his E7 build, I need to get it back.  Rest assured I will get mine back or order another and clean the links up on the E6 as soon as possible. It is totally flyable as it sets, but I did notice a little friction on the pitch and swash links. Sizing the ball links is important. I do talk about why on the video.

3. I was asked to talk about Castle ESC Governor Set RPM mode:
This heli does not have a Castle on it, but I will be shooting a video over the holiday break about the Castle ESC setup using my ICE2 160HV from my 750.

4. Tools and Preparing for the build:
There have been a few threads of late asking about what ideal tools to have, and those are all very good threads. I didn't feel the need to shoot video of my tools because what tools you use are subjective. There are a few tricks to properly preparing for a build, IE cleaning the machine oil off bolts, completely dis-assembly all pre-assembled parts, ETC. I touched on a few of these in my series, but for the sake of time, I didn't go into all of them.  I am considering filming a Tips on Prep video, we shall see how much feedback I get on the need.  There are SO many video resources out there. Finless Bob has done hundreds of heli build and setup videos. If you can't find something that answers your questions, please let me know. I will help were I can. I am not an expert by any means, but if I don't know the answer, I will help you find it!

Thanks again folks, the Synergy Family is growing fast, and we are truly a GREAT bunch of Heli Enthusiasts!

Thanks! I am glad the videos were helpful. Sorry I got a little off focus toward the end. I was fighting a bug that finally took most of my voice today :( The supplemental videos promised will have to wait, I am completely inaudible at this point.

I know building with the video took longer but how long would you say it took to do the build?  Just wondering if I start Saturday night if I may finish by Wednesday.  I won't be able to work on it non stop, but may get in a few hours a day.
Title: Re: Synergy E5/E6 Build Video Series
Post by: Chris Sexton on December 28, 2012, 07:33:58 AM
Oh yeah, the air frame can be completed in about 4 hours if you are familiar with Synergy kits. Electronics install and setup will depend on how finicky you are on hiding wires.

I cannot stress it enough, do not rush the head setup. It might seem mundane to keep popping off links and adjusting, or moving servo horns. But the better the head is setup, the better it will fly. Period.

Above all else, when in doubt, loctite it ;)

I second the head set up time. It took me longer than the build. I popped my links off multiple times to get it set up just right with all the degrees necessary. I also couldn't have done it without the RC Logger pitch gauge kit. Huge help and made it so much easier.

This will be my first Synergy build.  Like you said in the first video, the screws show you where things go unlike the "dinosaur" line so once I put things in alcohol and let it air dry, should go smoothly with my loctite and lubricants.  So you can use Boto lube for everything but the radial bearings correct?  Just seeing about those places where they call for grease. Unfortunately the head setup seems to take me 3 times longer then the frame build so that is what will slow m down I guess which is fine.
