I am putting together a used N5c and I cannot seem to get the tail drive pick off to operate smoothly.
I am thinking about ordering all new gears for it, but I would hate to spend to money if not necessary.
Any thoughts on this?
Also I've noticed that it appears you need to use a mini servo for either the tail rotor or throttle. Any
suggestions?
Thank you,

Does the transmission seem likes it is spinning freely if you take it out of the frame?
You'll need a mini servo for throttle, yes. I am using a BK Servo DS-5001HV but you can use any mini servo of your favorite manufacturer.

Yes, it spins freely when it is out of the frame
No biggie on the mini I was just surprised when I went to put a servo in.

If it's okay out of the frame, the most likely possibilities are:
- The tail boom is pushed in too far
- The torque tube isn't spinning freely
- The gears in the tail box are binding
You want to make sure that the end of the tail boom doesn't stick out past the inside tail boom clamp. You want it either flush with that inner edge or a bit inside of it. If it's pushed too far in, it puts pressure on the mushroom gear and makes the mesh between it and the bevel gear too tight.
