Title: Synergy E5 - Information Thread
Post by: Matt Botos on April 07, 2012, 01:56:57 AM
The E5 project just started at the end of January. A prototype is flying at the moment and I will post pictures when I have the canopy sample. There are some new "original" features that could be easily duplicated which is why I have chosen to not release pictures. As you could imagine, this is a very competitive market and I need to take advantage of every original design aspect.

A little more information about the E5 :

- 550 Class Electric Heli
- 10mm main shaft / 8mm head axle
- Machined Delrin Mod 1 Helical Main Gear
- Shaft Driven Tail System
- Monster Mod 1.25 Bevel Gears and Counter Gear
- Lower motor shaft bearing block
- Third main shaft bearing block
- Direct servo to swash CCPM (very similar to the E6/7)
- 52mm inner frame width for multiple motor options
- 25/30mm motor bolt width for multiple motor options
- Washout Arm mounting integrated into the head block
- 6S - 12S battery compartment capability (I am currently running 6S 5000mah packs)
- Easily stretched to 600 class helicopter with E6 parts

I wish I could give you a release date but as until I am closer to pre-production it is very difficult to estimate. Historically models that I have started in January are released in the summer.

Thanks,

Matt

Hey Matt,

I currently have a 12s Trex 550 that I need to buy packs for.  It will be replaced with the E5 when it is available so I was hoping you could give some general guidelines on 12s motors and pack size.  Thanks.

I got to have it! I'll have a complete Synergy family!

Matt, how about recommendations on servos and motor so I can go ahead and have everything ordered and waiting.

Hey guys,

I will have to get back to you on the 12S setup as I have only run it on 6S so far.

Servos - I am running BLS255HV cyclic servos and BLS256HV tail servo. Almost any servo will work as long as it is created with standard dimensions. The only servo I have heard of people having trouble with in the E6/7 is the MKS brand servos. They were able to make it work but needed to space out the servo to avoid interference as the servo dimensions are non standard.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt, I think I'll try it on 7S...do you think 7S batteries will fit?

Post by: Matt Botos on April 18, 2012, 07:24:04 PM
Hmmmm depending on the capacity and height..... it will be close.

7S is a very odd pack, you might be better off going for two 4S 3850-4400mah packs in series

I asked on one of the other forms but didn't get a reply so I'll ask here.

Matt what kv of motor is the E5 setup for on 6s packs? 1000-1220kv? Same pinions as the E6/7 (6mm)? Are you running a 100amp esc?

What's the appeal of a 550 vs a 600?  I'm guessing it's that people with 12s 90s can use 1 of those packs?

I'm trying to figure out reasons to justify another heli....
Title: Synergy E5 - Information Thread
Post by: Chris Sexton on May 06, 2012, 07:23:53 AM
I am looking forward to the e5 because of size. The 550 class is just small enough to fly comfortably in the field behind my office. Makes it easier to sneak out for a lunchtime flight. I plan to run mine on 6s. I have a small 50w 6s lipo charger in the desk at work. Takes it about 40 minutes to charge a 6s 5000. With an e5 I can charge the one pack and be ready for lunch. Right now I am doing this with my GAUI X5. Great bird but I would love a reason to build another synergy.

While we wait for pictures lets talk about what we're going to use equipment wise.  I need a shopping list.

Looks like standard servos, wide variety of motors if it's 6-12s?  Sure would be nice if I could find a way to re-purpose this Quantum 530 kv...

I love the idea it "can" do 12S, but I want to see how if flies on 6S. I am hoping this can replacing my X5, not that I am loosing love for my X5, but it is aging, over 300 flights, and I am thinking of a replacement. A 6S E5 would be awesome ;)

Agree with Chris.  Versatility like that is nice on power options.

I've reached a point where I think I know what I want now and can dramatically thin my fleet.  E5 is a key component.

1) Micro mcpx stays for around the yard
2) 550 for park flies, main beater
3) Anything bigger is nitro, n5C hanging on the wall to fill that role.

Not to start a war but since a lipo burned 100% of my house down in 2010 I just dont like HV electric setups much.  I know battery tech is getting better, but anything HV is going to be nitro for me (at least for awhile).  Everytime I plug in my Furion 6 flight packs I kind of cringe.

It's rare, not typical, and definitely do not want a war on electric vs nitro - but when this happens to you things get wonky.

This is news I have been waiting for! Since I'm starting over from scratch after selling all my helis 3 years ago for a move across the country, I can begin buying all the gear I need.

Are you going to let us know recommended motors, electronics, etc. to get ready for the release of the E5? I plan on getting the transmitter, receiver and collecting tools and set-up equipment, PS, charger etc.

I'm really excited to see the photos. Have fun in Snohomish! I moved from SW Washington to the Mobile, AL area to advance my career, so I know the area well.

Awesome! Woke up today to see the silhouette of the E5 on the Synergy homepage! I have been holding out on my leap from the 450 to a 500/550 class heli, and I'm glad I did. I will happily join the Synergy family as soon as this kit is available(gotta go 6S for now). I've read nothing but glowing reviews about the Synergy product, support and attitude on all of the forums. Matt, your doing it right, as is evidenced by your customers. Yes 550.00 for a base bare bones kit all the way up to 1,062 with battery, blades, ESC, RPM sensor. You can also do a custom kit and add in motor, turnbuckle kits for cyclic, and more. Ralph is a good guy at fblrotors and I highly recommend him. You won't be disappointed.

I know FBLrotors shop, I am a bit disappointed with their communication... I sent him a mail to buy rail blades and ship to Europe, I got an answer saying that he will answer me later and never received more news even after 2 or 3 more mails... But I hope that for an E5 communication will be easier. I am sure he is a great guy and for sure a busy man.. Anyway... Thanks for infos, I am in love with this E5....😃

In regards to communications with FBL Rotors Unlimited,  You are Correct in that Ralph is a very busy guy, He has a Very High Profile Job in the Aerospace Industry that requires him to be out of town Weeks at a time. When he does return home, You Know as well as I do the Demands there.. ;)    Now we get into the FBL ROTORS UNLIMITED, You can't imagine how much time Ralph spends trying to Grow this as well as Keep up with the every day demands.  and then there is the R&D of all these Specialty Tools He dreams up "When Ever He Sleeps" God know I don't know when,,,lol .  And the time with the machine shop making sure all the details are covered in his Brilliant Tools and accessories he comes up with..  I know it can be a little tough communicating, we talk at the Oddest times due to our Demanding Schedules going over new ideas as well as taking care of customers..  I know Europe is even harder based on the Time differences, small window.   Be patient. He is out of town again for a week.  If you need anything or have any questions, Please email me at  hwood3160@yahoo.com and I will fill in the gaps. Until then like the guys said . The Synergy Product Line and Customer service you receive here and with FBL Rotors Unlimited is well worth the weight... ;D

P.S.  If you find that your emails aren't answered right away, feel free to text him. This has worked great for me when it comes to quick follow ups during is Travels..

HI Kevin

I fully understand that Ralph could be a busy man, like me, like everybody, he is a father too like me....but it's true that I am not the boss of an rc shop. Sorry if my mail appeared to be rude, it's not te feeling I wanted to share with you. My mails were sent 2-3 months ago by now...still without answers and that's why I am disappointed. If someone didn't answer my mail, no problem I send a new one but after 2, 3 still without answers, I changed my mind.
That's not quite important as I managed to find rails blades in Europe, but FBLrotors is lucky enough to have more parts about synergy than everywhere else, so ordering at FBLrotors sounds good to me. I am not spiteful at all ( in France, most of the time, we are no good at all with mail answers..)and will order at his shop if possible in future with GREAT pleasure. I know that all MAtt Botos products are AWESOME.
Thanks for sharing with me your mail Kevin , I highly appreciate. But please, again, my criticism is not so bad, just see it as a constructive criticism to improve customers support.  :)

Norbert,

By all means Brother I didn't take your email offensively nor try to prove a point, call it a Blanket Statement. It was just to inform others of the crazy schedule Ralph has, No need to feel like you need to apologize, because I can assure you I'm not looking for one. ;) All is good, and After replying to this post earlier, I called Ralph and informed him of the situation, And I'm certain all is good to go. So please don't feel like I was coming down on you because that was the last thing I intended.. I can't wait for you to get your things, Especially your e5.. what a machine. Like I said before, if you have any issues trying to get in-touch with Ralph, Email me please and I will assist you.. ;D

Great !!  I sent a MP at Ralph.
but the main important thing here is E5....I was really impressed by matt's video, seems to be really powerfull and as I have lots of 2*6s 5000 TP for my 700, having a E5 should be a good idea  ;) ;)
I've seen that Matt use a CC120, do you know if 120A is really required or a scorpion 90A could be sufficient.. I thing that it's important to keep this heli as light as possible to avoid high disk loading, isn't it?

Norbert

Title: Re: Synergy E5 - Information Thread

Norbert,

In the beginning Matt had a CC100 on it. Now he has a CC120. I am running my set up with a CC120 as well as a lot of the other team guys( when we get them), With this you have flexibility to try many variations. Believe me, If he is running it, It will be fine, Matt is VERY Sensitive when it comes to weight and disk loading. Quiet honestly I venture to say a lot of us have learned quite a bit from him and the importance of "Weight/Disk Loading/CG's. It plays a big part in how the Heli flies as well as how it holds up.. You will be fine with it.  Good Luck!!!! Keep us posted!! ;)

Going with the 120 will ensure you have some head room for any spikes in amperage draw. I'm also going with the 120.

What is everyone running on these helis? Motor, ESC, Servos, fbl system? I def plan on VBAR but the rest I am clueless .. This will be my first decent size electric. Got to give Ralph a call soon for a expected arrival date.

Rick

I have the electronics for mine already waiting the air frame :)

My setup will be:
Scorpion HKIII 4025-1100kv
Castle Ice2 80HV
Savox SC-1267MG HV Cyclics
Savox SB-2272MG HV Tail
2S Lipo RX pack
Mini V-Bar Blue 5.3 Pro
Rail 556 Mains
Rail 96 Tails (unless Matt releases something smaller for the E5)
Pulse Ultra 6S 45C packs, size to be determined. I want to chat with Matt at IRCHA about how he setup his for 6S. Going 6S on this bird.

Im considering a similar setup as this.

My only concern is whether to go with Ice2 80HV on 6s or the 120HV?

Im leaning towards the 120HV to be safe.

Waht do you guys think.

On a 6a machine the amp load will be higher than at 12s machine for sure. I don't fly hard 3d so I rarely pull 80amps consistently on my x5 or e7 for that matter.

If you are running 6s and are banging the sticks. I would probably agree the 120 is much safer.

Just remember. Don't need a HV esc for 6s. Can easily get away with a cc ice 100. I am only using the 80hv as I already have one laying around.

+1 for 120.
On my L500 I can shut down Jive 80Hv on command with Pyro 600-11 6S.
HJ120 no problem.

Not sure if it has been posted and I missed it or not... Does the E5 use the same 116t main gear and pinions as the E6/7's.

I think that it's a 119 main gear.

I'm still hesitating between budget setup or optimized one.

Budget could be :
DHK 600 Brusless Motor 1050KV or 600MX 1220KV (Depending if counterbearing is mandatory in 6S)
Himodel 120HV ESC
Bec CC Pro
MKS DS1210 /DS1009 /DS610(5) x 3
Align DS655
Beastx
Rail mains and Tails

Optimized could be :
Scorpion HKIII 4025-1100kv
Castle Ice2 120HV or YGE 120LV
Eneloop 800mAh backup
MKS DS670 x 3
MKS BLS980
BeastX
Rail mains and tails

Both with Gens Ace

Matt plz, when ???

So, I made up my mind and pulled the trigger.  I started kind of putting parts together a few weeks ago, just in case...  My setup is going to be:

Align 600MX 1220KV
CC Ice2 120HV
3X JR 8717 cyclic
Futaba BLS256HV
Rail mains and tail
Sky Lipo 4400mah 30C 6S

Haven't decided 100% on the FBL controller yet but most likely AR7200BX or Skookum SK540.

This is excellent news Matt.
Haven't looked forward to a release as much as the E5.

Need to hammer out the build on a buddies Rush then two Warp 360's and hopefully the E5 will be here by then.
Gotta keep busy you know with flying days being few and far between with the current weather.

I can't wait for this Heli but not sure E5 or E5S. I already have all the running gear to fit it out as an E5S but E5 would be some fun. I sold my 550 some months ago and would like another. I think this heli will be the strongest of it's class well done Matt & Amy looking forward to seeing some of these birds perched out the field.

I set mine up as a 6S 550 and I love it!  I really like flying the E7 because it's just so frickin' huge but there's something about the E5... it just seems like the perfect helicopter to me right now.

hey guys , have any one ran E5 streched on 6s yet , and what head speed we need to perform for mild 3D to sports fly ?

There's a guy on RR running an E5 stretched to a 700 running on 6S, and now 7S with Rail 696 blades.  He was running 1600 RPM but says he's run it at 1700-1750, as well.

The E7 pinion isn't compatible with the E5 main gear.  I have a 1220kv motor with a 13t pinion and I've run as high as 2800 rpm.

savox 1200kv with 14t pinion was to fast for me .Great power tho, my batteries did not like that lol ,they got warm +,   ran 5 min at 90% flat curve  .will try tomorrow 12t pinion instead 14 .The head speed i was happy with was at 2400/2500 that is a sweet range. ;D .

Yep, that's probably my favorite head speed, as well.  I will admit, I did like 2800 quite a bit but didn't like the flight times.  ;D

Suggestion for the Cyclic Servo Installation.  If you have Servos with a top mounted strain relief for the servo wires (Such as the RJX').  It makes installation much easier to pull the top bearing block, install the servos in the lower block, then slide the top block back into place.

Since I have 3 different Synergy helis with different length tail booms, I've just been buying E7 booms and then I cut them down if I need one for the N5C or E5.  Actually, I've even been able to salvage some crashed E7 booms for use on my E5.  That's one of the nice things about them all using the same diameter tail boom.
