Synergy in this month's Model Aviation magazing
« on: February 01, 2016, 09:00:09 AM »
There's an article in this month's issue of the AMA magazine that mentions Gary Wright's stretched E5 and flying lower head speed 3D.  The author flew Gary's stretched E5 and liked it so much he built one of his own.  Pretty cool stuff.  8)

I think Chris has a user ID on this synergy forum. He's had an E7 for quite a while.

After flying my E5S there were some marathon texting sessions several evenings :) He also flew my SS (715's/116's) but wanted to do something for single 6S packs because he has a lot of them. He seams to be very pleased with the machine.

I knew that you posted on this forum, Gary, but wasn't sure about Chris.  My E5SS is set up with a similar philosophy.  I'm running an Xera 4030-480.  It's got more than enough power and if I dial back the head speed just a bit I can get 8-9 minutes of flight.  Even at 2020 RPM I get 6 minutes of pretty hard flight.  Love it!  I haven't even tried 716s on it because I had several sets of 696 Rails sitting around, so I used them.

Hey guys, yeah once I flew Gary's E5 I had to build my own. I've had the N5c for a number of years, and the E7SE for a little less than that. The E5s was a no brainer thanks to Gary!

Speaking of, check out the next couple of articles in Model Aviation, Gary goes into detail about his setups.  8)

I just flew my E5s again yesterday, it's a great setup!

Hey Chris,

Did you ever check the real kv of that HK motor?,.. or at least just run it no load and check telemetry for rpms and voltage?I think it was advertised as 800 or 810kv,.. but they have another winding that I think is 600kv. i had some ideas, assuming their posted kv's are accurate.

I never did, but I need to. I'm going to update the CGY firmware and go through the setup again, this would be a good time to check it out.

A bit more work now to remove it, chuck it into a drill press, measure voltages and do the math. We just need a rough number, so run it without a pinion, or with it moved away from the maingear, and check rpms on CGY display, measuring voltage with a wattmeter in series, and we'll have a pretty good idea.
