CGY750...
« on: March 09, 2016, 01:18:25 PM »
OK... so the E5 is up and running again after my initial attempt with the reversed compensation and subsequent self-destruction.

All fixed now and took it out yesterday for its first (well second) go with the CGY750.
Good news is it flew and returned in one piece.
Question now is...
Tail first
I have a slight tail drift (nose left)
and a little bit of a, not to fast, wagging at times.
Also a slight aileron drift (to the right).
Suggestions anybody?

I will start this out with saying I am a vbar guy who knows A LITTLE about the CGY.

slow tails drifts are USUALLY vibrations. if its not a vibration, then did you set up your tail neutral in rate mode to get the hover offset right?

a fast wag on the tail is typically gain related. either overall gain, or P gain if its in a hover, or I gain if its shaking while you are giving rudder inputs.

aileron drift is typically an unleveled swash, and/or vibration.

Vibration might be the issue.
In the crash the boom got nicked and I thought its probably fine, which it would of easily been if this were a belt driven tail.
But I'm thinking that maybe one of the bearings supporting the torque tube might have been damaged.

So I'll start by replacing the boom and torque tube to see.

Did you do a trim flight (hovering) with the rudder gyro in Normal mode to trim out any drift prior to flying it in AVCS mode?

I did not. Didn't think it was necessary any longer with version 2.

I think they eliminated the trim flight for the cyclic, not sure about the rudder.

I don't see any way to memorize trim stuff the way they use to, at least according to the documentation.

I always trim everything mechanically.

The rudder and swash too?

ok.....

as far as mechanically trimming the swash, yes, everyone MUST do this on ALL FBL systems. that is traditionally done during the original setup of the heli, when you set your horns at 90 degrees, and level your swash...

swash: you USED to have to do a trim flight and use the trim tabs to get it perfectly hovering, then land and flip into and out of gyro on and off a few times for it to remember the trim positions. you DO NOT have to do that anymore, the unit itself can do this is what I am being told.

the tail: you should always trim your tail rotor in rate mode IMO to get the perfect mechanical offset and equal pitch on right and left rudder. you do that by getting in a hover, and turning rate more on, that will turn heading hold off. if the heli begins to piro to the right, then turn heading hold back on, land, lengthen the pushrod a turn or two, and try it again, if it hovers and piro left, then land and shorten the rod a half a turn or so until you get the heli hovering as close to perfect as you can in rate mode, then turn heading hold back on and go to town! :)

its pretty easy, and the better the mechanical setup, the better the heli flys.

Mike summed up the exact same setup process I follow.  I don't like using electronic offsets if I don't have to.  I try to get everything adjusted mechanically versus using the trims and offsets in the FBL controller.  As far as trim flight, I don't do anything with the swash but I do check the rudder in rate mode and mechanically adjust the pushrod to dial it in.

Thanks guys...
My swash is perfectly level mid, low and high collective.
I will do the rudder trimming as described.
First, I suspect a vibration in tail boom, I think one of the bearing for the torque tube is notchy. So I'll replace that before doing the rudder setup in normal mode.
Thanks again.

I took the boom apart and noticed while doing so that the boom support bracket at the back of the boom was not tightened, screw fell out from me not tightening it in the first place when I replaced parts.
So that was the actual cause of the major vibration.

Drifting is now gone.
But I still need to do some tuning.Tail is stopping solid one way but giving some bounce in the other direction. plus other tuning thingies to take care of.

Note about expo... if you are coming from a different system check your expos. The CGY750 has default expo set at -20 the rudder as well as the head, so beware if you already have expo defined in your transmitter... you'll have double expo. Makes for rather slow response around middle stick.

Side note, good video series uploaded on youtube last week by Hobbico and Nick Maxwell on CGY750 setup, perfect timing.
