It's On The Way
« on: May 01, 2014, 10:51:17 AM »
My N7 kit is on the way from Amain to Illinois.  It is scheduled for delivery on May 6th.  This will be my first nitro heli since getting back into the hobby a couple of years ago.  I am really looking forward to the build and flying this kit.  I plan on using the Skookum AS720 Black for my FBL controller RJX FS0521HV Servos on the cyclic and throttle, RJX FS0521THV Servo on the tail, the OS .91HZ-R 3C Speed Red 61G motor and the Hatori  SB20FH pipe for OS 91HZ.  For an onboard Glo Driver I am going to use the SwitchGlo Pro.  The Tank clunk will be the OS Bubble Less.  I have a DX9 TX so I will be using Spektrum DSMX Sats for the radio system.  For a flight pack I hope to be able to get the Gens Ace 4000mah 2S Rx battery.  The battery is out of stock right now.

Nice!  That should be a great setup.  I'm running the same servos in mine and they've been super.  If you need any help setting up the Switchglo Pro, let me know.  I ran an SK540 with my DX8 and a Switchglo Pro on my N5c, for a while.  I'm guessing that the SK720 outputs will be assigned the same as they are on the SK540.

Thanks Rodney.  I am like a kid just before Christmas.  What battery are you using for your flight pack?  I prefer Pulse or GensAce batteries.  I attended a fun fly this winter in Arizona where I saw an N7 fly.  That pilot was using the GensAce I mentioned.  Another flyer was running a Pulse Rx pack which I don't recall the model number.

I'm using the GensAce 4000mAh receiver pack.  http://www.hobbypartz.com/98p-4000-2s1p-2222-rx.html  They've been out of stock for a while, though.

I bought the Pulse RX 1612 3600mah battery.  No stock that I could find for the GensAce anywhere.  Rail 106 mm Tail blades are in short supply as well.  My motor and pipe has been shipped.  My UPS guy is gonna be busy next week.

Nice!  I kind of went on a buying spree this week, too.  Trying to do my part to help spur the economy.  ;D

What RPM sensor would you suggest that I use for implementing the governor function of the Skookum 720?

Skookum likes the spectrum backplate sensor. Futaba magnetic works too.

I used an Align magnetic sensor on my N5C when I was running an SK540.

Looks like a great setup. I use the RJX cyclic servos, you will love them. Only suggestion I have is skip the bubbleless clunk and go with a fuel magnet.

Ben, There are four guys that I fly with at my field that have Trex 700n machines.  They are split 50-50 on bubbleless vs the sponge for fuel pickup.  Both sides have compelling arguments as to which is better.  I flipped a coin and the sponge lost.  If I don't like the bubbleless I will try the sponge.  This heli will be my first nitro machine since I have gotten back into flying.  I had an American Revolution back in the infancy days of RC helicopters.  (kinda shows how old I am).  Never did manage to drain a tank back then and I probably wont try and squeeze every last drop out of the tank now.

Thanks for your feedback on the setup I have chosen for this build.  I am really looking forward to trying the RJX servos.  I have heard a lot of praise for them and no negatives.  I also hope that the Skookum AS720 works out well.

I got one vote for the Spektrum and one vote for the Align RPM sensor.  I bought one of each.  I will start with the Spektrum and see how it works with the motor I've chosen.  I have seen reports that it doesn't work well and also reports that it works great.  One tip I have seen is to get the sensor s close as possible to the back plate without actually touching it.  Do you concur with that statement Chris?  Are there any other thoughts and or tips you could send my way about the sensor.

I am also not to keen on installing the magnets that come with the Align unit.

A question I have about the sensor.  Do I need to drop the voltage that I feed that guy or can I jun the straight 7.4v lipo voltage to it?

Hi Whitehedr;

Congrats on the N7. I attended the Phoenix Funfly and i believe i talked to you for a bit about the N7. ( i run the Pulse 3600 pack) Looks like you have a great setup going there! Give me a shout if you have any questions. BTW, i run the Lynx fuel magnet and it works very well for me.

Take care,
Brett

Hi Brett,  There were two N7s at the FunFly.  I do remember talking with you about your machine.  Mine has arrived but I am currently back in Casa Grande for a week.  We drove the RV home and I am now back to fetch my wife's car.  I stopped at K&C on Tuesday when I got back down here.  The shop was hit on Saturday night by a smash and grab.  They lost some helis and some quad stuff.

My motor and servos should be at home when I return.  Then I can start the build.  I am really looking forward to building this machine.
