E5 swash
« on: March 06, 2014, 10:16:06 AM »
hi all.
i have a fair bit of free play developed in my swash over the last 25 flights.
it looks like play in the bearing to me. a good few mm.

should i contact the seller or get it sorted through this website? im in the u.k.

only asking as on h/f i saw the same post and a guy answered and told the op to post the swash direct to him for replacement as he wanted to look at it.
cheers,
chris

Have you tried tightening the swash.  Loosen the set screw then tighten the large clamp screw. You can torque it down quite a bit.  Then adjust the set screw until binding occurs then back it out a bit.  If that does not work then contact Matt at matt@mattbotos.com

Cheers
Alan

thanks alan,
The swash bolt was allready tight enough, the grub screw don't make any difference to the free play.
i will try shooting matt an email and see what he says.
seems to me the bearing has developed alot of wear in just 25-30 flights, maybe it missed the lubrication process.
cheers,
chris.

The retaining ring will sometimes slip in crashes, some green loctite and an a socket will help you re-seat the ring against the bearing.  Be gentle, doesn't need to be banged into place, light taps.

i get that yes, but no crashes on this heli, its my baby  ;D
i can see the movement is between the inner race and the bearing seal, so it must be the bearing.
thanks,
chris.

Chris,

When you say "tight enough" what does that mean?  You can crank down on that bolt a good bit.  That is what it is there for.  Suggest you give it a try.

Cheers

Alan

when i say tight enough i mean it is well tight up against the bearing, i would not try much tighter for fear of stripping the thread.

as long as that bolt is tight enough to clamp the bearing securely, any tighter is a waste. it would not remove play from the bearing no matter how tight it was..
ill shoot a email to matt.
thanks,
chris

The bolt Alan is speaking of pinches the outer diameter of the radial bearing. The tighter this pinching mechanism, the more play will be removed from the ball race of the bearing. The set screw is only a minor adjustment.

Thanks,

Matt

I apologize Alan and Matt,
I dont think i made myself clear on this one.

I fully understand about the clamping force reducing the id of the outer bearing race, which it would to a certain degree.

I could not put enough force behind my hex driver so i have used a ratchet handle and hex bit to tighten down the bolt to the point where the alloy around the bolt has distorted, i can even see the distortion from the top of the swash.
I was not happy putting that much force on an m3 bolt in alloy.

There is still some play in there and the bearing has spring back now.

also, i have never had a new heli develop that much slop in the swash after just 25-30 flights so i think the bearing has failed for some reason.
Thanks for your support guys,
Chris.
