Title: Castle Creations Telemetry Link for Futaba Sbus2
Post by: cml001 on April 17, 2016, 09:26:45 PM
Anyone using the new CC telemetry link? I'm having trouble with the reading of the rpm... My motor is an 10 pole... And the E7SE gear ratio is 10.08... Those figures are entered in my 18SZ but its seemingly giving me motor rpm and not actual HS rpm... Anything I missed? Suggestions?

Just got mine in the mail yesterday and am currently working 12hr nights... hopefully I'll get to play with it soon. Maybe Chris can chime in.

I think Chris Sexton got one as well as Alan Butler the owner of HeliLids. I have one waiting on time to install.

I just did the update on my radio to make this work last night. I 'll be installing on my 766 with Castle 160 tonight and hopefully testing tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes!

I have all functionality that I'm suppose to.. But as stated, the rpm seems to be motor rpm and not head speed rpm... That's the only part I can't figure out... Lol..

be sure the gear ratio is entered properly on the CC GRAPH. not on the page where you tell it what HS to fly at, but when you use the graph to look at amp draw and power out and all, that one. I have seen the 2 be different at times. they are supposed to be linked together, but I have seen them not transfer before.

I think he is referring to the RPM display on the telemetry of the radio.  I think I got mine setup, won't be able to test today. But seems to work on the bench.

right. but like the graph gets reads it and does the math, the CC telemetry link would be pulling from the same place in the ESC, right? or am I thinking about this wrong?

The Graph is a PC function, that second setting isn't transmitted to the ESC. Which is why you have to change the gearing from one heli to another in the graph program.

You're pretty close to the issue though, as with the graph on the PC, the TX needs to know the gearing to properly read RPM.  I haven't gotten that far in mine yet. Just got the sensors registered. I'll report back details, once I sort them out :)

Clay, I'm just now setting mine up, haven't tested yet. But did you set your sensor type to "brushless motor" instead of "magnet" in your radio? I thought maybe this sounded like a good culprit for you.

Don't recall a selection for it... It asks for pole count & gear ratio.. But I'll check! Thanks

There seems to be a math error in the 18sz. It's multiplying motor rpm by the gear ratio instead of dividing! I hope they fix it soon. I'm not sure how that slid by the development team.

What if you put in a different ratio, meaning if your gearing is 10:1, put the inverse in, 1:10.  I don't have that radio so I don't know how you can input a ratio or gearing.  Just something I thought of.

That was my first thought as well, but the radio won't allow it. Only the first number can be entered. For example my E5 is currently set up at 8.5:1 so I should enter 8.5. The inverse as a decimal would be 0.12 but it will not let you enter a value <1. Womp womp

I just had a phone call with Clint. He is going to try to setup one of these on an 18SZ today in Huntsville. Nick Maxwell is there too so if they can confirm the issue, he will show Nick. He's going to get back to me later.

I been playing with the link also with no luck on getting the correct head speed. What I ended up doing bringing my gear ratio to 53 in my radio.

Hey Chris,
How did the testing go ? You have the 18mz?
Thanks,

I hate to admit it, I have two of these and an 18sz and MZ, I haven't had time to play with it too much. They are mounted (1 on the 766 and 1 on the E5) but that's about it.

Clint did tell me you can manipulate the Pole count to get the accurate number to read.  As far as a set fix, not sure yet. No word back from Futaba.  The TLO is sending the motor pulses, it's on the TX to do the math.

So this is the response I got from Futaba...
http://manuals.hobbico.com/fut/sbs-01rb-manual.pdf (http://manuals.hobbico.com/fut/sbs-01rb-manual.pdf)
A manual on the Futaba rpm sensor... Lol... I however look it over for the what if... Very bottom right of the last page.. Think that would work with the castle telem link?

Buuut... we can't set the sensor type to "magnet" if we're using the TL0, right? And the TL0 menu requires a separate pole # and gear ratio...

Seems to me it should be a two minute modification to the firmware code... if that! Change "×" to "÷" and done.

I finally got word to Nick Maxwell about this. He said it was the first he had heard of the issue and sent a message to the factory inquiring about it. He said he will let me know what they say and if there is a fix in the works. At least I feel like this has gotten somewhere now.

Spent some time with Clint and Steve Rogers tonight working on this on one of my 766s. It's actually much simpilar than you think Danny. It's off by exactly x100. Set gear ratio and pole count and watch. My desired head speed is 1660. It reads 166000.  1950, reads 195000.

Steve and Clint reported it to Futaba directly after Huntsville. Nick knows now too, thanks Danny.  We just need to wait for Futaba to patch it.

So I just left rpm off my display for now.

Chris, I would expect this is a product of your motor rpm and gear ratio. What is your gear ratio, and what does telemetry say your motor RPM is at your target head speed (if you set the gear ratio to 1)? Mine was not a factor of 100. My target head speed is 2350 and telemetry gave me 173723. :)

Traded emails with Nick, and that's right, it's a product of the gear ratio/pole count. In my case it just happens to be pretty close to x100.

The good news is Nick says they have identified the issue and he is testing the new firmware now. Hopefully it will be released soon!

A handful of us have done some beta testing working with Nick and Clint. The math on the Futaba side is fixed, and the official update is in the works. There is still a little bit of error in HS that seems to only show up when using Edge ESCs, but we haven't seen it with Talon. So we're still waiting for something from the Castle engineers on that. There IS a recent firmware update for Castle Link and the Telemetry Link, but it was not to address this particular issue. The ball is in their court, hopefully they're working on it.

So... assuming they're working on and will deliver a fix for the headspeed reading, how is this thing otherwise? Just wondering if I should bother with buying a few. Is it easy to setup and is the info useful/accurate? Thanks.

Castle released a beta firmware today that issues their fix. My tx agreed within 5 RPM to my castle logs :) Not sure what's taking Futaba so long to release their fix to the public, I'll make sure they didn't forget
