How do i remove the front trans mushroom gear?
« on: January 23, 2013, 11:35:49 PM »
This is my first helicopter build and i'm having some trouble. I'm attempting to remove the front trans mushroom gear so i can then remove the radial bearings and grease them (I do need to grease them, right?). Anyways, from the manual i'm assuming the gear is just pressed in but i'm scared to put too much force on it. What is the correct way to remove it? Thanks!

Bearings are greased, so  no need to do it.

I use a harbor press to remove the gear. Gentle pressure and it slide out.

Wow, so all of the radial bearings are greased in the kit? I don't need to remove and grease any of them? I've been killing myself trying to grease all of them based on what i've read on the forums (my fault for not asking). I was under the impression nothing was greased, nothing has locktite, etc? Anyways, that's fantastic news but i would still like to know the proper way to remove the mushroom gear if i need to in the future. Thanks!

In general Radial bearings are sealed and already greased. You want to make sure you grease thrust bearings and use loctite on everything.

Does anyone know where i can order a new spur gear bottom bearing block (320-303), 2x Radial Bearings (108-593 5x9x3), Bevel Gear Top Bearing Block (320-302), and Radial Bearing (108-510 5x10x4)? I'm an idiot for taking them out it seems and i don't have the tools to put them back properly, putting the blocks in the oven and the bearings in the freezer hasn't been any help, i just destroyed one of them forcing it in after fighting with it for the last day. I'd rather just order them new and start from the beginning if possible. Thanks!

Check out either Experience RC or FBL Rotors Unlimited. I know Experience had some parts in stock.

General use press

http://www.harborfreight.com/1-ton-arbor-press-3552.html

Excellent i'll go pick that up today. Is it safe to press all of the front tail transmission bearings in with that press at room temp? I don't need to heat the blocks in oven and cool bearings in freezer? Should i use any oil when pressing them in? I'm clueless and don't want to screw this up a 2nd time. Thank you so much for the help.

Heat remains the best way to remove bearings from the bearing blocks and blade grips.  You will be unable to use the arbor press to remove bearings from bearing blocks without damaging them as there is no method to engage the outer edge of the outside race.  Applying axial force to the center of a radial in a attempt to remove it will damage the bearing as will pressure on the bearing cage or dust covers.  In other words do not apply side force the center of the bearing unless you are planning on replacing it.  I use a torch to heat the area of the bearing block around the bearing for a couple of seconds and then tap the bearing block on a piece of wood. The bearings fall just out.  The arbor press is very useful for pressing the bearings back into the blocks.
