N5C TT Maiden
« on: March 08, 2014, 01:40:03 PM »
Successful.  Just put 3 tanks through her in the front yard.  This is my first ever nitro anything.  Much thanks to MJBurberry for all his help throughout the build.  Couldn't have done it otherwise.

Very fun to fly this heli.  V-Bar governor works great.  I feel like she has plenty of power, and I know she is running very rich.  I am using the OS .55 HZ-R, at stock settings.  I get about dead on 6 minutes to empty out of a full tank right now.  That is governed 2050 h.s. the whole time.  I am sure it would last longer in normal mode.

The short flight time is more likely a result of being rich than the headspeed.  I get close to 7 minutes on mine running 2150 and beating on it.

OK, here's a question.  I have a little tail wag.  At first I was using the default gain in V-Bar, I think it was 70 for main rotor gyro gain, and 75 for tail gyro gain.  I turned gyro up to 88, and tail up to to 85 (these are the values which I run my E5 on).  I still have a little wagginess to my tail even when the wind is not gusting.  I think it may be less than before, but it is hard to say.  What are some good values to run for gains in the N5C TT with the V-Bar?  I cannot see any binding in my tail linkages, and they do not seem to be tight either (IE I used the boto sizer).  Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I have found that most tail issues are indeed binding in the linkage.  What you think is smooth may still need improvement.
Remove the tail pushrod from the bell crank at the tail.  Does the pitch slider move without ANY effort.  Next remove the link from the servo.  Check for smoothness from there through the intermediate bell crank.

Well Mr. Alan, I swallowed my pride last night and followed your advice.  I removed all tail linkages, and gave them a good reaming with the boto sizer.  They are now slicker than dear guts on a door knob.  Anyhow, I felt like the wag was reduced but it was not gone, so I upped my tail gain from 85 to 92 (92 is what looks like the suggested spot for a Logo 600, 500, and 90 size in the V-Bar).  Well I still have ever so slight bit of wag.  I am not sure if I should try to up the gain even more, or just enjoy it.  It is of interest that there is zero wag during forward flight.

I always like pictures, here's a picture of her this morning getting ready to fly:

A little intermittent wag can be a rich motor. If you are still breaking in the motor minor power surges can cause a slight tail wag.

Hmm, I know I am running the engine very rich.  I was told to run it at the stock settings (which seem quite rich) for the first gallon.  I am a little nervous to start leaning her out because I do not have the experience with nitros to make sure I do not make her run lean and then burn up.  I've basically burned through a gallon of Rotor Rage at this point, so I suppose it will be time to lean up a little soon.  I think one click on the high end in the clockwise direction would be prudent- what do you think?  (I hear the HZ-R is very sensitive to tuning)

Definitely time to lean her out. +1 to what Chris said.

I leaned up two clicks on high end.  I think she is still plenty rich, but honestly, I want to wait to be around somebody who can show me what she is supposed to sound like before I experiment too much with tuning.  Hopefully one of ya'll can help me out at the funfly in Charleston coming up.

Now I don't know if it is just the novelty or what, but I gotta say, I don't know why anybody would want to only fly electrics after flying the nitro.  Much more fun as far as I am concerned.  Way cooler too!  My wife said she likes the nitro better too.

I have officially burned through one gallon of rotor rage, and maiden flight was yesterday.  This thing is going to start costing me money!

Not nearly as much once you lean it out  ;D

Anyone local that is fluent in Nitro tuning?

Cheers

I know a few guys who do nitro trucks, one of them has a fried cylinder on his keychain, so I'm a little wary to request tuning advice there.  The only people I know who fly helicopters are from this forum.  I have put quite a bit of effort into finding helicopter people in the area, and come up empty handed repeatedly.  On the other hand, if I wanted to fly planes, life would be great.

When I started nitro tuning the best person I found to help me out was in fact a plane flyer.  And he was a nitro engine genius.  Just look for somebody that has either gray hair a or bald head and they will tune the heck outta your nitro. :)
