Stripped 2 n5c main gears

Is there a way to set the backlash?  I've stripped two gears in 10 flights.  Seems like a lot of backlash.  I have a used belt model, thanks!

And how do I get main gears by Wednesday?  Lol

Adjusting the shims between the motor and mounts will let you adjust lash. Sounds like your engine doesn't need the shim.

What shim bud?  I don't see any

Could I somehow have a different pinion?  I bought it used

Make sure to adjust the motor by loosening the 8 bolts (4 on each side) and the 4 clutch stack bolts (2 on each side) make sure to tighten the clutch stack bolts first with the correct mesh then adjust the motor to the stack so the start shaft don't bind. You should be able to turn the shaft by hand the opposite direction without to much effort or binding.

I haven't had the motor out for a while, but I didn't remember the motor mounts having slots for adjustment.  I'll take a look tonight.  Thank you.

if I am remembering correctly, I have had my hands on this bird, right?

the motor mounts are not slotted, but they do allow for a little adjustment. do as tommy suggested and get the mesh set correctly with the clutch stack first, then tighten up the motor mount bolts. you can wiggle it around a little to get everything lined up perfectly.

when worked on this heli, before I sent it back to you, I didn't notice excessive gear lash. it was set exactly as my N5C is.

Mike, yes that is her.

Ok, so took her apart last night, and boy am I glad the gear stripped.  I took my pipe off on Saturday and the ring was black, last night it was sliver.  At some point between then and now the motor wasn't happy-about a gallon. 

But the problem now is that my starter shaft is stuck in the one way in the clutch.  Based on this I think I had it misaligned for the last 10 gallons or so.  I took all the bolts off the motor and now the motor is just dangling by the starter shaft.  Odd.  Never had this happen before.  I'll try a few different things to get it apart tonight.

I think I know why this happened.  I was using an align starter.  The starter was "jack hammering", something was wrong with it.  I think that probably messed up the one way, now its just holding.

sounds like your problem man. it probably bent the start shaft a bit, and then everything just got extremely unhappy....I hate to hear that man!

I would definitely recommend the Sullivan Dynatron, I got one from eBay for £32 posted. 4s Lipo, and will go for ages. Powerful and smooth operation.

I got a new starter a couple weeks ago, but the damage was done.

Got her apart last night.  The pins just fell out of the one way.  They were toast.  The starter shaft has a groove in it where the pins rode.  Does a new shaft have a groove?  Because when i put the shaft in my old clutch where the one way is still good, but clutch is bad, the one way operates, but it's rough. 

I guess my next question is, how do you replace the one way inside a clutch?  I saw conflicting threads on rr.  One says to heat it up, two other say to use an arbor press, or sockets and a vise.  Any input?

new start shaft does not have a groove. the one I had go bad on me did that too, but a groove in the start shaft...throw it out.

you can use an arbor press to get it out, you can also use the socket method. whichever you use, just be careful not to damage the OWB. the safest way to do it, throw that clutch in the trash and buy a new one. haha

I use a small machinist vice as a press to push the one way out of the clutch and and then back in.  I block the clutch up with two blocks of aluminum while allowing room for the one way to exit the clutch.  I made a piece of aluminum slightly smaller than the hole for the one way to use as a ram to push it out.  It's as simple as lining things up and cranking down on the vice.  To install I have a block that holds the one way securely while I line it up over the hole. Crank the vice and the bearing slides right in. 

Just make sure you get the one way oriented proplerly when you put it back in or you will be getting some practice in removal.
