Quantum 4530-500
« on: September 14, 2012, 02:38:56 PM »
Is anyone running the quantum 4530-500 in their e7? What are your thoughts?

I'm currently using the stock hacker but i've been offered a 2nd hand quantum at a good price. I noticed matt using this motor in his 1000rpm headspeed video! I've been thinking about the quantum as well as the scorpion 4525-520 ultimate for a while.

I don't currently have one in my E7, but I have been thinking about it too. I run one in my Goblin 700 and it is a beast! Runs a bit hotter than the Hacker, but way more torque.

Well i installed a 4530-500 today and have had 4 flights on it so far. My original Hacker setup was:

A50 12L 470KV
13T Pinion
12.5 degrees collective pitch
2050 rpm vbar governed
2x 6S 4000 Gens Ace 30C
Hobbywing 120HV
Kevlar belt

I first tried the quantum on a 12T pinion to get the same throttle overhead at 2050 rpm. I was amazed that i could immediately feel the extra weight of the motor which made the heli less floaty and slightly slower to accelerate. However the extra torque was very obvious and i couldn't bog the motor at all during the 5 minute flight. My flying style is average 3D, and my collective management is not great.

I then changed to at 13T pinion and settled on 2150 rpm which felt much better overall. I think the heavier setup needs the extra rpm to provide the same snappy feel. The 4530-500 ran significantly cooler for me than the hacker, and my ESC temp peaked at about 80 degrees C during continuous tic tocs.

The 4530-500 is extremely powerful, however i have to admit i really liked the way the e7 flew on the hacker, despite having less torque. I'll put some more time in on the new motor and have a rethink in a few weeks.

I'm running the Quantum, I have about 335 flights on it with no problems.  It is a very smooth running and has plenty of power.

12s E7, what pinion and pack mAh? Seems like the 500kv would offer better range of opinions for pinions and head speeds at 12s.

I'm using a twelve tooth pinion and 5000mah packs.  I know there are plenty of folks using 4400mah packs as well.

I got a Quantum 4530-500 brand new in a box on my shelf, I got this motor from Greg Alderman, The Story is when they first came out they were the Bomb!! however with the growing popularity of this motor, especially with the Goblin, the motors went into MASS PRODUCTION, with that being said, Many test were run on these motors and even a few of the Team Synergy Pilots were sponsored by Quantum, however with the gain in popularity came Inaccurate KV's.  Meaning just because you bought a 4530-500KV motor didn't mean that is what it actually ran.. Personally, for me I'm not that anal about it but some of the guys this became a deal breaker. My motor sits on the shelf now since A few of us Team Guys had the opportunity an picked up the Scorpion as a Sponsor. Not saying Quantum is a bad motor by any-means but just a tid bit of info.. ;) And Matt did run the Quantum during the Video however the Scorpion Deal came right after, Plus he did alot of R&D with Scorpion on prototype motors, which allowed him to offer Team Synergy Pilots the 2 year contract.

Agreed, I mostly asking about the quantum because there is no info about the scorpion version. I will pick up the scorpion (500 or 520) as I have learned a lot from Lucien Miller along my journey and have had great support.

Wise Choice young Grasshopper ;)
Run Castle 6.5 bullets and get a damn good set of Batts. Scorpions prefer Top Shelf Batteries,  Gens, or TP's..

Wonder why the scorpion 500 is $50 more than the 520. Seems like they are very close KV and a small in increase it watts.

Go with the Ultimate 520kv. It's a great motor. I'm running 2 of them in my E7's. Tons of power and running cool on 12t at 2100 rpm.

My secondary business Includes aerial visuals. I have two multi rotors that can carry smaller cameras up to my NEX5N. I may want to mount a gimbal on the E7 to try out the Canon 5D with its awesome video capabilities. Not sure as the NEX is very good. So far. It's all about vibes and isolation. So my thinking was a slower turning high toque motor on the E7. The 500kv might down shift me even farther with the 12T and offer some room to go up with a 13T if needed.

However I do see a lot of 520UE videos showing how nicely powered it is. My ratio of 90% normal heli to 10% experimental aerial rig may not be worth trying to find a motor that will do both. Carrying an extra 3-5 lbs may not be capable with either motor. The one cool thing is the 62mm frame could except a very large torquey low speed motor in the future. Or maybe drop to 10s.

First thing first is to get it going and spend a year getting some time in! Including IRCHA!
I dry fit my E7 together today just to get acquainted with the build. Coming from a 450 and the 130x, the size blows my mind! It's like a Rolex on steroids.

This new E7 heli came with the 520 LE delta wind. Heard it like to eat ESC's.
