Hello from WV
« on: December 25, 2012, 09:10:46 PM »
Hello all,

Just wanted to say hello as I'm new to Synergy.  I've been lurking for a while but Santa apparently decided I had been good this year and I found a Synergy E5 kit under the tree this morning.  It will be my second build as I've only been flying for a little over a year so I'm really looking forward to ordering the electronics for it and getting started.  So, just wanted to say hello and hope everyone had a great holiday.

Thanks,
Chris.

Thanks for the welcome and the comments everyone.  Really looking forward to this build.  Regarding the setup, Chris, as I haven't done too many of these builds, I'm not planning on varying too much from the norm on this one.  I'm going to set it up on 6S with the Scorpion 4025-1100 and the Castle 120HV ESC and I've been playing around with the setup of an MSH Brain on my Blade 300X in anticipation of using a Brain on this heli.  Also planning on using the Rail 556/Rail 96 blades on it.  I was bummed to read about FLBRotors curtailing their operations a bit as I was planning on getting some of his setup tools and even ordering the electronics from him but it sounds like he has a full plate right now, so I certainly understand.

The things I'm presently torn on right now are the servo setup and I'm trying to decide on whether to use the Futaba servos Matt has on his setup and seems to recommend or going with the Savox servos that you indicated you used on your setups.  Looks like it's hard to go wrong with either of them based on the specs and the Savox setup is a little less expensive so I may go that way as long as they fit property without shimming, etc, that some of the other servos folks are running seem to require.

My only other build is a T-Rex 250 as my other helis are Blades, so I've not had the occasion to make the decision between an external BEC or a receiver pack.  I'm leaning towards a 2S Lipo pack but am a little apprehensive doing that since I haven't put a setup like that together before and am fairly comfortable with Castle's programming and Link so I don't think running a Castle BECPro would be a big deal for me.  It seems to be the consensus that a receiver pack is the "better" way to go but just a little unsure.  Definitely doing some reading on this forum and HF as the posts are incredibly helpful in that regard.

Thanks again everyone for the responses.
Chris.

Chris, you may just want to pick up the phone and give Ralph at FBL Rotors a call. I'm sure he will still help you out.  I can't comment on your servo question as I have no experience with Savox servos.  As far as the BEC  vs Battery my guess is that about 75% or more of the folks here are running BECs but, as you said the battery is also a option.  I run the CC BEC Pro on both my E5 and E7.

Hi Chris, as a background my E5 is my first electric heli as ive always done nitro and I will be going with the BEC myself. To me it just feels like it's a cleaner operation than worrying about an extra receiver LiPo pack and worrying about where to stick it on the heli.

I went with the Futaba BLS255 series for cyclic servos and they went in with absolutely zero issues. Nice and flush with all edges and no slop when tightened down.

Chris. I have Savox servos on the E5. I also have Savox HV's on an E7. The ones I am using on the E5 came off another heli I flew over a year ago. They have held up well.
If you do run a BEC you might look at adding a Scorpion backup guard.  It's cheap insurance. I had a Castle BEC failure earlier this year and run packs on the E7's now. My E5 12s also has a pack. The 6s one I am working on will use the Castle BEC but with the scorpion backup guard.

Cheers
Alan

+1, I run a backup guard on the E5 and E7 as well.

Chris.

Well as you can see, servos and how to power them is a very subjective conversation with LOTS of great ways to do it.

I have ran about every servo brand out there, and I have settled on the Savox HV line for 2 reasons:
1. Available, all my Local Shops carry them so I never have to wait if I dump one in a crash.
2. I have a couple hundred flights on the set in my E7, and they have seen 4 crashes and they are still going strong and have no noticeable slop when powered up.  They are a touch noisy though.

The Futaba BLS servos are FANTASTIC, just a touch pricey for me. If you can afford them, I highly recommend them as you will never need another servo again! Save for crash damage of course.

I tend to prefer Lipos, but that is only because I have had BECs fail. With the new Scorpion Backup Guard, I wouldn't hesitate to run a BEC again. As said, it is cheap insurance.

I put a Brain on my E6, if you need any help tuning it, let me know. I have been playing with mine and seems to be just as tuning friendly as my VBars.

Have fun with the build. It is very straight forward, but as Matt has said, his kits are different than other brands. Since you haven't build a lot of "other" helis, you won't be at the disadvantage of having some bad habits other kits can cause.  Take your time, and ask lots of questions. And remember, when in doubt, loctite it :)
