Head speed

Hey all... Going through setup of my first use of a govenor. I gave an E5 6s setup. I am generally a sport flier and am just now getting into inverted flight with basic loops, flops and rolls.

No idea about head speed etc. so was wondering people's opinions and experience and preferences.

What head speed do you run?
Why do you prefer that over faster or slower?

I have seen 2300 to 2400 floated around in threads.  I was informed 2300 is about the cut off before needing to upgrade the tail gears for slower head speed.  It really comes down to what you want out of it.  More pop, more headspeed.

I run 2350 on mine.  I have run it faster than that but the shorter flight time wasn't so much fun.  I don't like to run it any lower than 2350 because I'm using some 5000mAh battery packs that are somewhat heavy and it just seems a bit mushy on collective at the lower head speeds.

I'm running about 2050 on my E5 (if I remember correctly) and flying at 6.5 minutes.  I need to go through and redo my setup as  friend set it up but it wasn't fine tuned.  I'm awaiting some different dampeners and going to stretch it and speed up the tail as well.  I'm using 4400 and 4500mah packs.

I have flown from 2050-2550. the sweet spot for me was 2350, decent flight time with good "pop" with a great feel. and not so fast that it would get away from me. 2050 was fun, but not for 3D flying like I do. I need the extra HS to get out of trouble quickly!  ;D 2550 was just too hard on the packs and the ESC.

I had the same skills of the OT some months ago.  I suggest 2200 rpm (4400 mah) because the softer collective response makes easier learning lazy flip and rolls. When you learn rainbows you need pop. In this case 2350 rpm is recommended

Hi,

On my 6s E5 i run 2350 and 2550, i prefer th 2350 as i run 4300 Optipower 50C Ultra and 4400 GensAce 60C packs which balance the E5 perfectly but are resonably light. The 2350 gives outstanding performance with the lighter packs, the 2550 is just insane but good fun!!  ;)

I'm running 2450 on my 12S E5 running 556s.

That said, I always recommend you play around with different headspeeds. I typically don't pay a lot of mind to the actual head speed. It's the feel of the heli in the air that I pay attention to.

Play around with different headspeeds and find the one that feels best for you and your flight style.

Thanks guys.., settled on 2335 with a 5000mAh 6s 65C pack. Getting about 6.5 mins of very smooth and controlled flying with gentle flips and rolls etc.

I may be late on this topic as the OP has already made an initial choice of headspeed to run.

Its fine to talk about headspeed, pack capacity and flight times for a particular flight style.
But theres another major factor that people haven't mentioned and it is GEARING.

So you could be running headspeed of 2300 using any of  12, 13, 14 or 15 tooth pinion with the 119 tooth main.
And depending on motor/esc choice some gearing combinations will work better and be more efficient than others at a selected headspeed.

I'll let others who know a whole lot more on the subject to decide if they want to comment on that as well...

For what its worth, I recently built my E5:
6S, Scorpion HKIII 4025-1100, Edge 120HV using 4400mah 35C Nanotech batteries while I'm getting used to the heli. Main gear ratio is 12/119

I now have about 20 flights on my E5 and am in a very similar space to the OP for flight style. i.e. circuits, 8s, loops, flips rolls, and some inverted flight.

Along the way I've tried governed headspeeds of 2000 up to 2300.
I'm finding 2200-2300 works nicely for the type of flying I'm doing and am getting 5:30 flights with about 30% left in the packs. I think I could stretch flight time to 6:00 at 2250 and land with 20% in the batteries.
Alternatively dropping the headspeed to 2150 I think 6:30 would be achievable, but right now I'm enjoying the responsiveness of the heli at 2250 rpm. :)
I'll try higher headspeeds as I get more time in the air and may try 13/119 gearing to see what difference it makes to flight characteristics and flight times at the higher headspeeds.

Just some food for thought.

My setup is the same as @Wolf51 except I use 13T and 5000 65C packs with HS 2165/2265/2335. I'm getting around 5.30 - 6 mins flight time coming down with 30% and 20% respectively on 2265/2335 on some old second hand pulse packs.

I prefer the 2265 HS at the moment.

@Mike, not sure if you mean 2250 is insane on your heli or on mine at 6S, previous post.  :)

As it goes, I've been running 2200 the past couple of weeks and it feels fine for the type of flying I'm doing.
Flight timer set at 5:40 and landing with 30% in the pack. After a flight the motor, ESC and battery temps are similar - just warm.

I haven't been overly concerned about aerobatic performance yet.
Just happy to get some flights in and get used to a whole lot of things that are new to me.
And dealing with some 3rd class flying weather at the same time.

Next time out I'm planning to do a couple of flights to compare the feel of expo when controlled by the iKon FBL or my DX8 transmitter. I'll stick with 2200 headspeed for that 'cause I already know what to expect.

After that, maybe try increasing the headspeed to 2300 and see what that does to the ESC logs.
