109-110 mainshaft shim
« on: February 03, 2014, 05:25:04 AM »
hi guys,
i have a gap under the maingear, the owb sleeve is not sitting on the lower support bearing.
if i loosen the mainshaft lock collar i get up/down play.
the gap looks to be about .50mm.
i have looked in the box/spare parts bag and there is no shim for the mainshaft.

my question is how thick is the 109-110 shim please?
chris.

The E5 doesn't assemble with a 109-110 shim , only two shim are on top and bottom of the auto-hub , the upper and lower collars take out the vertical play. Make sure the lower collar is installed with the boss upward and the upper collar downwards

im aware the 109-110 shim is not for the e5, the heli is assembled correctly (bearing blocks and collars all correct)
also the owb shims are both installed.
but i still have a gap at the bottom above the lower mainshaft support bearing..
if i undo the mainshaft lock collar i get up & down movement of about .50mm.

Ok yes that gap is between the auto-hub sleeve and the lower bearing. I think that small gap needs to be there the lower bearing block is supporting the bottom of the main shaft on mine the auto-hub and sleeve do not rest on the bearing.

Good find, I haven't seen that post. I have less than 1mm gap and been flying about a year that way no issues with it. Seems like yours with be fine without an extra shim.

The E7SE manual has 109-110 has an extra shim listed to go on top of the lower collar , I don't know the thickness of it. Almost looks like 0.5mm from the pictures in the Synergy Store

Both of my E5's have about a 0.5mm space between the auto hub sleeve and the bottom bearing.  Once has been flying for over a year.  The other about 6 months...  No issues..  You do not need a shim.

thanks for the advice guys,
i must admit i am a bit anal about things like this and i would rather see the bearing against the sleeve as this will take the strain away from the lock collar which moved on the maiden flight.

i have found some 10mm shims from a bag of shims i bought ages ago to shim up the diffs in my r/c monster truck.

i have one that is .30mm and one at .20mm so i will try them, i also have the option of turning up a shim in the lathe, but tbh parting off a .50mm shim in the lathe is not really the done thing and would give mixed results.
a shim is normally stamped out of sheet.

the heli is smooth but while in flight i get changes in the gearing noise.
it sounds like a fluttering noise, the sound changes as the load is taken off the motor then re-applied.

maybe the motor is floating up and down on its shaft or im just not used to the sound, the motor is quite loose against its bearings, i can pull it up and down a mill or 2.
for helical gears you really need 0 free play, or as near as you can get to 0 in both shafts.

i think i will shim the mainshaft first and fly, then shim up the motor and report back.

thanks,
chris

a quick update,
i found that gap to be .40mm, .50mm made the owb too tight and caused some binding.
i used a .30mm and .10mm shim, it has also taken all the free play out of the owb drive bolt, i think this is better.
now we have windy weather so i cant go test it  :'(
we have gusts around 30-50 mph... "sob"... i hope the wind drops for tomorrow.
im going to hit the sim today, any of you guys fly on phoenix??

I use both Phoenix and RF7... not much activity on RF7 online compared to Phoenix.

Most folks are still flying RF6 and not 7.  Still plenty of activity on RF6.  Too bad they keep them separated out like that...

hi guys,
i got a pack in yesterday, inbetween the showers we have.

im a bit worried about this noise i have, it sounds quite rough while in flight and the shim has made no difference.

i think the main gear has runout, at least thats what it sounds like.

one side the main gear the mesh is tight, the other side is alot more loose so i think that is the issue, i was expecting it to be alot less runout than it is.
ill run it up without blades later on and see if i can pin point where the sound is coming from..  :-\
