The blade grips on the Synergy E5 are larger that the blade grips of most 500 - 550 sized helicopters. The measurement between the blade grip arms is 14mm (or pretty close). The blade root on the Rail 556 blades is 12mm, four 1mm shims with 4mm holes are required for proper mounting, one shim on the top and bottom of each blade root. Do not attempt to squeeze the blade grips together using the blade retaining bolt (or any other method) in order remove the extra space and forgo the use of spacers. The result of doing so will be unpleasant at best and could result in the destruction of your helicopter and or injury to you or others. Spacers are not included with Rail 556 blades nor are they included with most other manufactures blades under 600mm. The reason for this is because most 500 class helicopters have blade grips that are 12mm (10mm in some cases) and therefore spacers are not needed. The Synergy E5 was designed to be configurable, and in anticipation of pilots wanting to stretch the boom and run larger blades a more robust head was included as standard equipment. Other manufactures sell upgraded heads for their 500 class machines for $60 or more to allow their helicopters to swing larger blades, on the E5 the upgrade is standard. A $1.99 set of shims are required if you are using blades with roots less than 14mm. This seems like a pretty good deal to me so don't forget to order your shims. Another course of action would be to purchase a E7 kit and a set of Rail 696 blades. You could then use the 1mm spacers from the 696 blades for your E5. ;D

Great info, hopefully during the next manual revision this information will make it, as well as a disclaimer from funky monkey when they sale their 556 blades. When I'm writing my books I come from the standpoint that if someone could make an error in practice they will so try to include the "what-if" scenario.

I don't understand the meaning of this statement as it relates to the subject of this thread. Are you implying that a mistake was made and that my explanation was in some way supposed to be a cover up? ???

Ideally, blade manufactures would include blade root width and helicopter manufacturers would include blade grip width for both tail and main blades as part of the product specifications.
-
My kit came with shims for mains and tails.
Did you not get any??
-
I was wondering the same thing. The blades didn't have any included but the shims were in one of the standard plastic bags inside the E5 kit that I received.

I have not heard of shims coming with a kit. Check out the picture just to make sure we are talking about the item. If it did that is great please tell us where you bought your kit and when. The shim in the picture below is 22mm wide x 1mm thick and has a 4mm hole in the center.

Maybe in the later kits they were included.

Make sure that those are not the tail shims because that's what I had in mine, not the main blade shims.

The blade shims are 1mm thick x 22mm wide with a 4mm hole in the center. The tail shims are much much smaller.

Must be a later version then. Mine came from Ralph at FBL Rotors and I ordered a couple days after the release date in December just FYI if you're doing some bench marking.

I had mentioned this to Matt early on when teams kits were sent out and being assembled. I believe he started adding them to the kits after that but I am not sure how many had already gone out.

Thankfully Chris sent me a set and I hope to have the Heli ready for lift off when they arrive. Maybe I'll finish programming tonight. Funny that a couple of pieces of aluminum are going to keep me from testing the e5 tomorrow morning lol

Hey guys I do not have the shims for my 556's what are the exact dimensions and where can I buy? I agree they should be with the kit or the blades. Hopefully they are easy to get.

The link is in the tools and supplies list. The blade shims are 1mm thick x 22mm wide and have a 4mm hole in the center.

Ok thanks looks like that site is our of the shims. Helidirect has 1mm shims with 5mm hole would that make a detrimental difference?

I have NKYheliguy covered. In the mail in the morning. Getting kinda thin spacers myself though. Fortunately I was putting some 716's on my E7 so I had extra.

Hi Guys,
Just finished building my 2nd Synergy E5... love this bird and all the flexibility and fun it brings!
However, I can not find the blade shims that are 1mm thick x 22mm wide and have a 4mm hole in the center.
I would be more than happy to pay for a set of 4 of these if anyone has them to spare please and thanks.
Any help appreciated!
Thanks Dave (HeliDave)
