Kontronik Pyro 600-11 on E5
« on: March 17, 2013, 01:08:23 PM »
I am planning to change over to Synergy, the particular one I likes is E5, and have some questions that I hope any one here could help.

I have read that everyone is recommending Scorpion HKIII-4025-1100 motor on E5, I have no problem with this motor except that I don't have dremel tool to grind a flat spot on the motor shaft. I have looked at combining price of Scorpion motor and dremel tools, which is same as if I just treat myself with a Kontronik Pyro 600-11 motor. But the problem is the motor shaft on Kontronik motor is only 22mm, which is shorter than the one on Scorpion (33mm). So my worry is, whether the length of the shaft on Kontronik Pyro 600-11 motor is long enough to fit on Synergy E5.

Also can I run Kontronik Pyro 600-11 with Castle Phoenix Ice2 120HV ESC

Last question, Kontronik Pyro 600-11 is only provide 1050kV, should I go for Kontronik Pyro 600-12 which provides 1200kV. I will setup as 550 and running all manual recommended blade (main and tail), gear ratio and pinion.

Many thanks.

I don't remember having to dermal a flat spot on that motor. I want to say that motor comes with the flat spot.

Hi,

You shouldnt need to dremel a flat spot on the shaft of the Scorpion HKIII4025-1100 as it should come with a flat section already machined into the shaft from the factory.

Thanks for your gays' reply, but if you refer to this post -"Tools and supplies for Synergy 'E' Build" at: http://synergyrchelicopters.com/forum/index.php?topic=1195.0
, it's clear state in red that - Dremel Tool / Flat file small ( if you use the Scorpion HKIII 4025 you will need to grind or file a flat spot on the motor shaft for the pinion set screw to seat against.  If you skip this step your pinion will rotate on the shaft.  Locktite is not a substitute for grinding a flat spot on the motor shaft.  Locktite will not prevent the pinion from rotating on the shaft! Using Locktite on the pinion / motor shaft is not recommended, the only exception being the setscrew )ended, the only exception being the setscrew ).

Also, if you refer to this build video, it's also clearly says that grinding a flat spot on the motor shaft on Scorpion HKIII 4025 is mandatory. YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=P1PPyTZK3fw#!

Now, I am really confused, I hope some one can help~~

Same here never dremeled a flat spot on any Scorpion motor. But if you wish to go with the Kontronik go ahead it's going to work.

Thanks for all of you who provide me with a such useful information. I will give it a try, at least if Scorpion HKIII-4025-1100 doesn't come with a factory machined flat spot on motor shaft, I can always swap to Kontronik.

But in the case, which one should I go for: Kontronik Pyro 600-11 provides 1050kV, or Kontronik Pyro 600-12 which provides 1200kV. I will setup E5 as 550 and running all manual recommended blade (main and tail), gear ratio and pinion.

Many thanks again.

ZCI_ZR, unless Scorpion has changed or modified the motor shaft on the HKIII 4025 1000KV motor you will need to grind or file a flat spot on the motor shaft.  Under no circumstances should you attempt to use the motor if the shaft does not have a flat area for the pinion set screw to seat against.  No locktite of any color will prevent the pinion from rotating on the shaft.  Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that you would but, a hobby shop in the Atlanta area told a new heli pilot recently that the flat area was unnecessary provided that "permanent" Locktite was used.  I think some of the previous posters attempting to answer your questions may be confusing the HKIII with any of the previous versions which did have the a machined flat area on the motor shaft.  Additionally, previous versions had longer shafts. You can use a small flat file to create the necessary flat spot on the motor shaft if you do not have need of a Dremel tool in order to save money.   A 22mm shaft is not long enough to properly engage the lower motor bearing block. I hope you find this information useful.

No Dremmeling on my Scorpion Motor.

So is the Pyro 600 a drop in replacement for the E5?   I am thinking about getting one to try.

Thanks

Hi Rich,

Thank you very much for you reply, that is very very helpful, as I was really confused by the Synergy official build requirement on this forum and the previous replies from Synergy team flyers.

I have alos contacted Kontronik regards with longer shaft on Pyro 600-11, here is the reply I have received:

" thank you for your email.
We only have one shaft for the PYRO 600.
Please note, that a longer shaft can destroy the bearings if you have side-torque to the motorshaft."

Therefore, I think the current best option for me is to get the HKIII 4025 1100KV motor with a dremel tool.

I don't think Pyro 600 is good choice for now, as I have contacted Kontronik regards with longer shaft on this particular motor, and here is the reply I have received:

I recorded that video and I don't recall grinding a flat spot. I will have to watch it again, I bet I was speaking in general that some motors don't have a flat spot and some do.

I will rewatch it... My HKIII 4025-1100 had a flat spot already.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply, your videos are really useful. Regards with the grinding a flat spot, it's happens around 15:00 minute.

I will add that when I purchased my HKIII 4025-1100 motor I had to grind a flat spot with a Dremel. Took only 5 minutes and even when I hit asphalt with the blades the pinion did not slip and I used red Loctite.

Ok  that video is using a HKIII 4025-550kv for my 12s setup.  That motor didn't have a flat spot. The 1100 does and the newest batch of 4025s do as well.
