My take so far on the E5 from Synergy
« on: January 14, 2013, 12:49:48 AM »
My take so far on the E5 from Synergy. I first saw this on Matts phone back in Febuary 2012 when he and Amy visited Australia at Wagga Wagga. Just knew I wanted one. I was loving my other Synergys so it seemed like a logical step. After what seemed like forever, come September 2012 and pre orders were out. Naturally I ordered one and waited again. Finally ariving in January 2013.

I started to plan what I was going to run in it while I was waiting. I was going to run BLS451 for collective but after destroying 2 of them in my E6 I decided this was going to get expensive every time I crash so just went with and I will just call them 610"s but have used a BLS251 for tail. Hey they work fine for me.

This may not make very good sence to some of you but is perfectly logical to me!

I was going to try a Hawke 120 with a CC Bec but I should have looked more closely at the specs as this will not fit between the frames. DOH! After i had a spit I ordered a Kontronic 100 as I use other variations of these in my other models.

I happened to have a KDE motor that I was going to put in another model  but decided to try this as well but low and behold you need a long shaft for the bottom bearing. These shafts are about 15mm too long so you need to cut it down to suit and grind some more flat for pinion screw. Also had to use shorter motor screws than supplied but no big deal.

Using a Silverline V-Bar as there was a great deal on them at a well known stateside store had.

Ok this E5 has some great new features such as the new style tail control rod ends. I hope I can adapt these to the E6. Has break away canopy mounts yet to be trialled and quick release mounts (nice touch Matt). Love the new head with intergrated swash followers and the ball link adapters. Not quite sure of the greasing holes on the grips though. Look kinda small so let me know if you have used them yet.

Nothing difficult about the build though. Just the great quality you have come to expect and love from Synergy R/C. I am running 6s as was intended. Fine if you run 12s but as I run my E6-7 as an E6 thought I would stick to 6s.

Only had a few packs to test so far and I like. As this runs 556 main blades it is much smoother than another brand 550 I also own. I am going to enjoy this. Was it worth the wait? Hell yes..............

Shane, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the E5.
The holes on the blade grips for thrust bearing lubrication work well if you use the BotoLube syringe.

Thanks for sharing your experience Shane, always good to get new perspective.

I wanted to touch on the Hawke ESC. I am running the Hobbywing Platinum 120A HV and it too won't fit between the frames. I used an old plastic parts box I epoxied shut to space mine about 1/2 an inch to get the ESC to clear. Just a thought :)

Found out the hard way that the motor shaft flat needs to be extended down the shaft more on the KDE motor.  Thought I had an ESC problem when I lost power on my second flight checking tail gain.  Turns out the pinion set screw was against the shaft right above where the flat ends.  That would explain the perceived bogging I was experiencing.  Luckily all I lost was a pair of landing gear.

Glad you got it figured out Rich!
I'm still on an elated feeling from the two flights I had last Tuesday.  And I probalby won't get it in the air again until Thursday or Friday, but what a helicopter...how many helios have you anxious to fly again?!

Still have my trusty E7 that I flew yesterday.  Looking forward to getting the E5 up again next weekend.  Dang short days!

Thanks for the comments.

Chris, thats an interesting idea for the ESC. I thought about just raising the tray but I prefer the ESC to sit down a little for better protection. Thought about putting on the side but did not like it there. If you can get away with not destroying big ticket items in a crash I'm all for it. Since you did some nice vids I though I would just tell a bit of a story rather than just specs and so forth.

RichH, I think we have all had this happen one time or another, Just a part of the learning process.

Brandon & inner3, I still love the "High' you get from flying. I'm still as keen as day one and that was about 5 years ago.

RichL, I have some Boto Lube so will try it next time I need to.

Yeah, its been two years for me, but at the same time this is the best heli I have ever flown.  And only 2 flights made me realize that!  I was nervous on the first flight because I never flew anything this size, but by the second flight it felt like I was on the sim...just no red button to hit for a reset.
Glad I'm still excited in this hobby.  Spending this week on the sim doing funnels 1000 times a day and it is still fun.  We will see if it still is by Thursday  ;) but that is how I learned flips last year.  1000 times a day for a week on the sim and then in real life it feels easy.  I have a maneuver for each week until March that I'm doing this training.

I have a Hobbywing Platinum 150A on my E5.  I was able to get it to fit by trimming down the plastic mounting base on the ESC.  I went with the 150A because I was planning on only running 6S, anyway, and that ESC is dirt cheap.

Thanks Tim.

I doubt I will make Wagga this year. I will however be attending Moonta though. Little bit closer to home and support the locals. Loving the E5. Got yours yet? Sorry no vids yet!
