Odd tail belt wear
« on: May 17, 2012, 02:30:09 PM »
I am having problems with tail belt wearing out from left side when looked from tail. It seems to rub on idler mount block near main shaft. I have tried tightening the belt, but i fear it starts to be too tight. I can squeeze the belt about 1-2 mm in the tail box.

This is my second belt in this in six months. First belt had to be replace because it was worn rounded from left side and now it seems that this new belt will do the same. This belt in pictures has been flown only about 10-15 times and you can already see it worn. In the last attachment alse idler mount can be seen and that has been worn also pretty badly. Mount block has not been renewed. Also there is quite a lot rubber dust and parts around main shaft and engine. Also after flight you can see rubber piled (heap) on tail box's endmost spacer. It seems that in tic-toc's and hard manouvres belt might somehow slap and that idler mount or something.

I have to say i like this heli a lot, but for me its belt has been a problem and i really don't like to be replacing belt all the time. It just is not that much of a fun. :D I would appreciate if somebody could help me.

Bottom picture says it all, your boom is past the inner brace. It needs to be flush, I am going to PM you my cell # and I will get you squared away.. Trust me You will be fine, Nothing wrong with the Heli other than a very simple adjustment  ;)  I have a belt I will be glad to send you for a fresh start.. ;D

All Belt adjustments should be made from the rear tail Box.  Meaning the tail boom will be Flush with the inner most Tail Boom support.  Your Bottom Picture will help explain. When You look at the pulley, just aft of that you see the Tail boom protruding through the Tail Boom Support. You want to loosen the screws on both the tail box and boom supports as well as the Frame side pinch bolts.   You want the boom to be flush with the inner support, Then tighten the frame Tail boom support brackets   Tail Boom Support,   and then make your adjustment at the Tail Box..   With the heli on the table, pick up the rear of the heli with your finger (placed on the bottom between the rear tail drive pulley and the boom. You are looking for 2mm deflection. when you achieve that you are golden!!! give me a shout and I can explain further and also give you a few Tips and Tricks that will turn that frustration back  into an addiction!!lol ;)

Kevin you hit it on the head. The tail boom seems to protruding and that looks like were the belt wear is coming from. Also are you using any silicone spray on your belt. It's looks kinds dry. I spray silicon on my after every 5 to 8 flights to keep her moist.

Also make sure your Idler pulleys in the FRONT AND REAR are "FREE WHEELING"   Make sure you don't tighten them to tight , will Fail the Bearing as well as wear the pulley and belt as well.  +1 for the Rock!! ;)

Thank you to you all.
I have to readjust that boom and in the weekend go to test fly it. Hopefully belt issues will be fixed with this adjustment. I seriously should have read manual more carefully because there it is (Make sure boom is flush). I got ElyQ V50C as a beater and i've used to adjust tail belt tension from heli end of the boom so didn't even think adjusting from tail box end and didn't think too much tail boom position when i built it.
I am not yet going to replace the belt because damage is not too big yet (hopefully). I will replace it if belt still get scratched.

I got 6 flights today with N5c tic toc's and other hard stops where it earlier seemed to scratch the belt. Today, no rubber dust anywhere. Everything was smooth and i could actually make much better autos after i could adjust belt tension to reasonable level. Belt and tail worked as it is supposed to.

Again, thanks for the help to all you guys.

Yes, you are right. Have to change that belt before next flight. Don't want to break it now that it works perfectly. =)
