Of course, now it's going to be a while before I get more of a chance to check this out since I'm going to have to order some parts for the N5c.  The head axle and main shaft are bent pretty bad and I don't have spares.  It doesn't really matter, anyway, since now I won't have a transmitter until I get a new one.

I have been running CY Wildcat since last fall when I bought the N5C. I changed the plug this spring just to be sure but I have yet to burn one out.  Most of the folks I fly with use it and with no complaints.

 I run CP 30% with a cap full of Marvel Mystery Oil per Gallon in the little guys. And 15% CP with same Cup full per Gallon and never have had an issue, I don't get the opportunity to fly often so I that is the reasoning behind that, Kinda "Pickles" the motor. Never had an issue with bearings since I started doing this...

I run the standard Magnum 30%. It's very close in my opinion to Cool Power. Once when I ran out of Magnum unused Cool Power and only had to change my high needle by a click. Then I was able to switch right back to Magnum. I would not hesitate to use Cool Power in a second again.

My understanding is that compression & nitro determine ignition timing and too much of both, or either I guess, then would cause detonation. The Redline .56 heli engines come with extra varying thickness head gaskets but not much documentation of what to do with them. My buddy burned up two of those engines before replacing it with another brand running the stock gasket and 30% Cool Power, one did "hole" the piston, I think the other broke the rod. My guess is that lower compression (or lower nitro content) might have prevented that, but who wants lower compression? We want MORE power!!!

It seems like detonation could be detected by high engine temp that just won't cool down by richening the mixture but I have not had a problem on my OS 55HZ. Years ago when I was measuring engine temps I learned that approaching 300 degrees F and higher is the "overheat" point to avoid and again its been a while but 265 F sticks in my mind as a good temp to shoot for. I am running 30% Cool Power w/#8 glow plug and have run about 10 gallons through it still on the same plug.

I am looking forward to getting the temp sensor telemetry probe, once they are available again and I have some extra cash, for my 14SG and may revisit this whole temp thing.

Any of you guys have some good data on the cause of detonation and how to detect, tune or adjust for it? Also, anyone using engine temp telemetry currently and what readings are you seeing?

P.S. RodneyK, I still did not see which engine you are running???

Rodney, what are your needle settings, high speed, midrange and low?

I really thought the new carb with midrange needle would be an instrumental part of the tuning but found it interesting that the manual suggests leaving it at 2 turns except for minor corrections. I will admit I err to the rich side and do deal with a little bogging when initially spooling up before lift off and could probably eliminate that with low speed adjustment but until it is more of a problem like causing flame outs I may leave it alone as it never cuts off at idle.

Have you considered any type of in-flight temperature (telemetry) monitoring? 10 years ago I strapped a T-Maxx buggy temp sensor with the corded LCD readout to monitor things, yes I did have to get the heli kind of close to read it but at the time that was all there was.

It's no fun flying when you've got to worry about some type of failure, especially when your not quite sure what the cause is. Let us know what you find out.
