Why using the 4.5:1 tail ratio?
« Reply #15 on: November 25, 2012, 07:15:26 PM »
Why did you increase the tail ratio to 4.5:1?  Are you running a lower HS?  Any particular tail authority detriment when keeping the stock 4.0:1 tail ratio?

Thanks,

John

"Tail Gear Ratio – 4:1 (optional 4.5:1 ratio for E5 stretched)"

It looks like an option for those running 606 blades
E7SE, Sliverline VBar, Edge 160HVf, Scorpion HKIII 4530, Futaba BLS, OptiGuard and BEC Guards

E5-626, Vbar NEO, Edge 120HV, Scorpion HKIII 4035, MKS 950/980 OptiGuard and BEC Guards

Good to hear on the 6mm pinion I.D. I will be going with the 1000kV Xera motor!

Guys,

I am running the E5 stretched with the 4.0:1 tail ratio. I find the tail performance is very good. Now keep in mind, my head speed is 2350 which puts the tail at 9400. I am also not "Bobcat Driving" if you know what I mean.  8)  If you are looking at stretching and going for a lower head speed (2100-2200) then I would definitely consider changing the tail gear ratio to 4.5:1.

The E5 will also swing 106 tail blades for those interested.

I am also working on an E5 stretch "kit" which is essentially the E6 boom, torque tube, and tail push rod all in which will be 60mm shorter so you don't have to do any cutting. :)

Oh yeah.... my E5s is still running 10S 3850 packs with the Scorpion 4035-630kv motor. I'm hesitant to change it as I really enjoy flying this setup! With that said, I do have a 4035-560kv motor and 12S 2700 / 3300 packs ready to go for when I get motivated.

Hope that helps!

Thanks!

Matt

I would definitely be interested in a ready to go stretch kit where I don't have to cut anything. :)

Thanks Matt for your feedback.
Do you think that E5s with e6 stuff without any cutting job can swing 623mm blades ?
if we swing 606 rail, can we pair with 106mm ?

Thanls for your support

Absolutely yes to both questions.  The stock E6 boom would probably be fine up to 640s.

Yea cutting the boom and TT sounds easy enough with pipe cutter, didnt think about one of those!! But I have to admit I also look forward to a kit premade!!  ;D  I'm pretty darn excited about a stretched E5!!!

It's interesting how there seems to be a lot of people that are going to stretch it right out of the box.

There is a desperate need for a bullet proof 600 class machine that's light weight. On paper a E5s seems to be firing on all cylinders.

If its as good as it sounds, it would make a lot if marketing sense to just sell it as a complete 600 kit instead of an optional add-on.

Based on what I know, is there any trade off or downside with this model as a 600 machine? It looks proportional, appears to have a good CG.

The only downside seems to be the lack of a mod 1 main gear, and the motor width is 52mm max. I can't fit the ultimate 600 class motor - 4225-550.

I'm in a bind. I'm wondering if a E5-S looks as visible in the air as a E6? I'd really wish someone would post a clear picture of an E5 with a canopy next to a E6 with a canopy from different angles. I did ask this before and didn't get much help. The last thing I want  is something similar to a Compass 6HV which is horrible for visuals.

The immediate benefit is its a pound lighter than an E6 according to Matt.  I saw Matt beat on it at heliextravaganza on 10s..pretty wicked I must say!  E5 stretched or E6? Either way you cant lose!

On the Snap - The main gear is 119T Mod1. It is slightly larger in diameter than the E7 main gear and a few millimeters thinner. Very tough gear! You will not have any troubles with this main gear, just make sure you mesh it right! :)
On the Ultimate 4225-550 motor..... yes you can fit it! It's only .3mm too large. I was going to put it in my personal helicopter with a few frame shims but I figured I better run an "unmodified" version for now. The modification would be very simple. However, the 4035 series motors are 4000 watt motors which is way more than you need. I estimate many people using the 4025-550kv motor and swinging 600mm as many people do not want the ultimate power house which many times means shorter flight times. Either way, have fun! There are more configuration options with the E5 than any helicopter I am aware of right now.

Everyone - the stretch kit will allow you to swing 620's with 96mm tail blades. If  you want to swing larger tail blades or larger main blade, use the stock E6 boom. I do not see the need for 106 tail blades if you are using the 4.5:1 ratio. I am using the 4.0 ratio right now with 96mm tail blades and the tail holds great.

NovaCX12 - Here is a pic next to a Compass 6HV  --> https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bkfWezdpR8E/UK7RkX44sNI/AAAAAAAABE8/jNz6Q_4MT-U/s1024/IMGP1827.JPG
Visuals will not be a problem with the E5/E5s

Thanks,

Matt

OK I just wet myself. : :o

Matt you should really add mod 1 main gear to the list of features. It's not even in the manual. I wrongfully assumed it was not mod 1 since it was mysteriously missing.

I already have a 4225 on hand and would definitely like to use it. It's biggest advantage us weight. Just 390g compared to 460g for the 4035.

So I should use frame spacers? What thickness do you recommend? Maybe .3mm per side? .3mm ID?

Good idea, I will add the Mod1 main gear to the manual and website!

Since the motor is 52.3mm OD and the inner frame width is 52, I would go for a .5mm shim on motor mount and maybe the front of the bearing blocks. Also, an old trick I learned with carbon.....

1. Insert pop sickle sticks in between the motor and the carbon frame on both sides of the motor.
2. Slowly heat the carbon frame with a heat gun and it will mold right around the motor.

This gives a very cool looking bent carbon frame look around the motor. I used this trick with the Logo 14 many years ago. Be careful to not over heat as the resin will start to bubble.

Thanks,

Matt
