Magnetic Canopy Mounts
« on: June 26, 2013, 10:30:47 AM »
Hey guys has anyone use any magnetic canopy mounts on the n5c? If so can you recommend which one?

I cracked my canopy on the first use :(

Thanks
Bill

I like the idea of magnetic mounts, but you don't want to use them on all four points.  If you get going fast in backwards flight, you can rip the canopy off.

I don't know which QuickUK mounts fit the N5c, but I am sure someone will pipe up.

I personally run the Synergy Push on type mounts on the front two and the standard threaded mounts on the rear two.  If you open up the grommet holes just a touch, the push on type can be very easy to install/remove while not being so loose they rattle around or come loose in flight.

Ok I will try opening them up a bit.

Thanks for the replay.

Bill, I use QuickUK magnetics on the front and Matt's push pin's on the year.  I would not trust magnetics all the way around. I think I used some TRex 700N mounts for the front.  I will check them to see which ones they and let you know.

I agree with both Chris and Alan that having a set to secure and lock the canopy from coming loose is good practice....but on the other hand when I had a Trex 700n with a OS105 doing fast backward inverted hurricanes with magnet mounts I never had the canopy blow off.  The gentleman who told me about them was a 30 year veteran in the hobby and flew harder than myself with Zero probs. But...thats not to say it couldnt happen, but they are very strong magnets.

....and truth I have them on all 4 points on the E7 same flying style and canopy stays on.  maybe I just have gotten lucky lol...but if it does come off, I certainly will switch to the locking mounts!! lol

I run QuickUK T-Rex 700 magnetic mounts on all 4 points of my E5 and have no issues with them even slightly coming out.

Disclaimer though: I do not do crazy stuff. I can see where there's a concern if you were doing some hardcore backwards flight that it may pop off.

That said, for all 4 to pop off and throw the canopy I think would be somewhat rare. Possible but rare.

Brandon,

did you have to shim with washers or were they plug and play?  I'd rather go magnets on the E5s than the key chain style...just my preference though :)

Check to see if anyone has a used canopy that is in good shape before you replace the canopy with a new one.

Kevin,

No I did not shim or use any washers. Stock grommets in the canopy and just used the screws/hardware that came in the Quick UK package. Didn't have any modifications or additions & it actually gave it a bit more stand off which left me more room for the main gear and BEC which I like.

I don't have issues with the stock canopy keychain thing, except one of them is not working.  Guess I'll order a new set wen I get the new canopy.  Are the magnetic ones reliable?

I think it depends on who you talk to and what their flying style is. There is always the potential that a lot of backwards fast and hard moves can let magnetic mounts break away but many have had no issues. I'll readily admit I don't fly hard so I'm not worried about it but some folks are and some have to.

I think that's what worries me.  The canopy flying off and causing more money to come out of the pocket.  I think the keychain mounts are pretty reliable.

They keychains are absolutely reliable and lock in place. You should go with what you're comfortable with in the end.

I wil definitely keep that in mind when I get the new canopy.  Are they more expensive than the regular mounts?
