Heat
« on: September 20, 2014, 08:39:50 AM »
Hi guys, I have been doing a lot of reading, and most ESCs die from to much heat. I live in SW Florida, very hot here so I was thinking to put the fan on my CC 120v Esc. I do not want to put holes in Matts great looking canopy. Some afternoons here can get to 100 before you even lift off. Does anyone know if the fan from the CC160 will fit the 120?, They do sell it separate. Now all have done with my E5 is hover around the front yard and the ESC does get pretty warm. Can't wait to get to the flying field to take this thing upstairs and ring it out. What doe you think? Or im I just worried to much. Thanks From Naples Florida

The Castle 120HV is pretty robust.  Even though you are running high heat-generating currents with the 6S setup, the ambient temperature is pretty high, and ventilation may not be the best, the 120HV should be able to take it.  Consider checking the internal temperature on your Castle Logs.

Great idea, I have the data down loaded  already, it said 150 and that's just hovering around with the canopy off too, and only 5mins

How do you have your ESC held down?  If you're using a battery strap, or something thick like that, changing to a single zip-tie will help with cooling.  The battery straps block a lot of the surface area of the cooling fins and also keep air from flowing over them.

I just have Velcro on the back. Single wire tie I will do for  safety reasons :)

Not sure how true this is, but maybe just hovering made the esc warmer.  Castle even states the stats for their esc is based on having airflow.  A few years ago I read somewhere that hovering will cause more esc heat then forward flight.  It may not be scientific,  but I have read this a few times and from my own experience I found this to be true.

That has been my experience too.

I use a combination of the 4mm thick HobbyKing foam tape on the back and wrap with zip-ties.  I like how the thick foam tape has vibration dampening properties.

Hovering requires more power. You're not getting any lift from anywhere but the blades. That said, the temps should still be pretty low as our helis have such a ridiculous p/w ratio.

OP what do you consider as warm? Warm to the touch is generally well within bounds. Eg, 110*F.

If it's getting way hotter than that in a hover, then something is amiss. Gear mesh too tight, motor settings off, running a really low throttle curve to compensate for high gearing, defective components, etc.

Have you yanked data from the ESC via castle log yet? Lots of useful info in there. You'll see if you're pulling excess amps or if something else is off.

I've gone into angry hurricanes full collective and come down at 140*F on an E5-S on 12s. Weather was a particularly hot/humid day in central VA (90%, 97*F).

You COULD retrofit a fan onto your ESC, but you shouldn't really need it unless you had shoved the ESC into something really restrictive like a scale fuse (had to do that once).

I took it to the field it flew great, DATA log said esc temp 150 that with 6s 12 tooth pinion the small one in the e5 kit that's canopy on over 5 minutes , could of flown longer battery over 3.89 per cell in batteries, ikon set up on gov. 1800, 1900, 2000 flew on 1900 most of the day 3d, setup on ikon. Flew fantastic its fast, loops great, roll are perfect like its on rails, did inverted power out was fantastic lot of power. Temp gauge at field was just under 100 and humidity 98%. The batteries are new I did not want to push too hard, batteries were just warm. I think everything is good, gear mesh is very smooth, I will set the gov. up a little more its under 80% in data I think its should be 85% but I didn't fly on 2000 rpm. that might help. I was having so much fun with it. I have stock gearing in the tail, so speeding up will help with tail, 540 were a little slow. I may just set idle 3 at 2300 like to get more flight time on her. Today has her first real flying. I very pleased with it. Great day when you go home with everything is in one piece.

Other than I use Deans on the BEC, this is exactly how I do it.  Never a heat problem.

With an ambient temp of 100 with some humidity, your ESC temp numbers don't scare me too much.
