Canopy vs Main gear issue
« on: May 09, 2015, 10:14:17 AM »
Hey guys I finally madiened my new N5c and had my first problem the canopy had rubbed the main gear and now I need a new gear  :( the canopy is fine but I'm now wondering if my canopy is not shaped correctly as it shouldn't touch the main gear at all, has anyone had this issue and what have you done to fix it. I'm sure this wouldn't be an issue right out of the box.

Canopy vs Main gear issue

Hello Dave!

When you say you need a new gear are you referring to the bottom edge of the gear is rounded a bit?  Take a picture it's probably ok. Mine do that too on a new canopy.

The problem is that the canopy on the n5c hugs the frame very tightly. If the canopy is allowed to heat up while laying flat, like say in a kit box on a shelf, they distort easy. It's a simple fix.

Put the canopy on the model. Wedge a cloth between the main gear and canopy on both sides. Carefully warm the canopy with a heat gun or put the heli on the porch in direct sunlight for an hour or so on a hot day.

Let the canopy cool completely before you remove the cloth.

I have also seen some shim out the rear mounts a touch to add a little clearance.

If your gear is damaged I can send you a new gear free of charge. But I bet it's ok.

Let me know if I can help!

Chris

Hi Chris thanks for the quick reply I'll use your tips to sort this out A new gear would be great if it's not to mush bother it has chewed a fair chunk off. I can't post a pic right now.

Also while we are talking canopies what would you recommend to aid the quick removal of the canopy I tried the synergy quick release mounts on the front but the exhaust is to close and I can't get the canopy on. I'd rather not use the quick release on the back as I want the rear locked in.

I always use the synergy push on mounts on the front and the screw type in the rear. I have a mechanical switch and a straight 2s lipo on min so I don't need to take the canopy off while hot. Using telemetry so I check rx voltage before starting. If it's low I'll change the rx pack but the pipe is cold by now so getting the canopy off is easy.

I see your in Australia. Not sure how long shipping will take. I'll see what I can do

Thank Chris I'm going to put a switch in and I do run straight 2s. The exhaust looks standard size but I still can't fit the canopy on with the quick push on ones, is anyone you know of using the quick magnetic ones I think that style would be great if it fits.

I tried magnetic mounts on the front and didn't like them. It was not very easy getting the canopy on or off with them.  I'm using the thumb screws on the front and key chain mounts on the rear. I know that some people are using the N7 front mounts on the front.

N7 front mounts on mine, with quick connect mounts on the back. i use 2 tail blade washers to space each female side from the frames on the back. allows plenty of room. very easy to operate, and do not have to get near the pipe at all.

Dave, yeah that is something to keep an eye on with the N5c. I was using the quick push-on mounts everywhere but at the front exhaust side and using the original thumb screw there only but over time the threads started wearing and too often that mount had started to unscrew in flight. I got the idea for the Quick UK magnet mounts from another team member and use them on the front and key-chain mounts on the rear and I'm quite pleased with that setup. Spacing is critical and I too have used some tail blade washers to help.

I am interested in Gasser Mike's comment on using the N7 front mounts on the N5c, I just got a set to put on my E7 but he's got me thinking!

Good luck,

Bob

this is how i did mine.....  http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=676331

the only difference is this - when i install the channel mounts on my canopy i do not mod the canopy at all. i literally just install the M3 both right through the round hole with the rubber in it. that allows you to move your mount around a little to line thing us, and also give you a little more room. the rubber will push the canopy out a little bit, and it also constantly applies a little tension to everything, keeping the bolt from vibrating loose (that last part i only came up with in my head, but seems to be working just fine :) lol )

Thanks Mike, I didn't see your reply till today. I ended up ordering some more Quick UK magnet mounts so I can switch canopies without moving them but they seem to be getting more difficult to locate. It looks as if the 766 has the N7 style on the front canopy! I really like them I just haven't gotten around to configuring them.

I have used the thumb screws in the front and key chain style on the rear.  I typically would  only take the canopy off about every third flight so the thumb screws were never an inconvenience.
As I mentioned elsewhere I have started placing a piece of pool noodle foam between the main gear and canopy while storing all helis.  Sliced in fourths a 6" strip placed between the canopy and main gear will keep it from rubbing when ready to fly. After initial reshaping of the canopy to cure your current problem of course.

Cheers

Great method Alan! I use the N7 "U" channel mounts on the front and N7 key chain mounts on the rear on my N5C. When doin this mod I also shimmed it out a little further than the stock width to help with clearance of the main gear. Don't give it a lot, keep it off the pipe. But it's the best way I found. I also cut a small finger hole so I didn't have to remove my canopy until time to swap out the RX pack.
