N5C throttle linkage setup
« on: May 21, 2013, 04:00:13 PM »
Hi,

How have people set up their throttle linkage on the N5C? The picture shows how I have set mine up (the throttle is at 50% in the pic).

Cheers,

Ali

Looks like the arms are at 90 degrees at half throttle.  You should be good to go as long as the servo is actually at mid stick at half throttle. I assume this is this case?

Cheers

Yep, sure this is the case :). I was asking because I has seen people doing it differently, e.g. like the attached picture (where the servo horns always stay parallel to each other). I wondered which is the best way to do it.

Cheers,

Ali

Hi Ali,

Your throttle setup looks good, as long as your getting a linear throttle movement and your servo output arm length match the engine carb throttle control arm you should be good to go.

What i usually do to make things easier when setting up is first get the throttle linkage rod and set the ball links on each end so that when put up against the servo and throttle arm on the carb i can see the servo output spline screw through one ball link hole and the bolt in the throttle control arm through the other ball link. I generally do this with a vernier gauge but this is can also be done by eye.

Next, set the ball on the servo output arm and throttle control arm on the carb so that the distance is exactly the same or as close as you can get depending on what servo and arms your using. I usually find with OS carbs that 17mm is the sweet spot if memory servs me right!  :)

Next, power up the radio system and set 50% throttle and then loosen the bolt securing the throttle control arm on the carb. Next i fit the throttle linkage rod and you will notice there will be a hole in the carb extension arm, what i do is use a Hex/Allen key tool in the hole and position the carb so it is at the 50% throttle mark then tighten up the bolt securing the control arm to the carb.

I have used this method for years and it usually give me a very good mechanical setup with very minimal travel adjustment required.

Hope this helps, and any questions just give me a shout. :)

Cheers,
Ross

Thanks for your response Ross :) With the N5C throttle linkage (because it is over/under) to make the horns parallel the rod has to be a different length than the distance between the output spline of the servo and the throttle control arm bolt. This is the bit that confused me. With a normal throttle setup having the rod the same length as the two pivot points would make the horns parallel and this would be fine. Have you set yours up like mine or have you set it up as over/over like a standard throttle linkage?

Cheers,

Ali

Hi Ali,

No worries, always glad to help!  :)

I set my throttle linkage as and over/under as i found this gave me the best alignment for the linkage. I found that the arms of the servo and throttle control arm will not be perfectly parallel but i kept the distance of the ball links on the arms the same and the length of the linkage the same distance as the pivot points, this kept the throttle movement linear and only require a small amount of travel adjust at full throttle to reach 100% throttle.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,
Ross

I was going to post a picture but that second one above is actually mine.  :)

I've tried it both ways and the geometry just works out better with both arms the same direction.

Mine are both on the bottom of the links. Seems to work great. I set my centers exactly as Alan said on another thread.
