Title: Batteries
Post by: Greg Jackson on December 23, 2012, 01:25:50 AM
Looking at some different battery options other then thunder Power. I've had success with nanotechs but wanted to see what batteries forum members were going to use.  I'm running 6s.
Also, what size are you all going for (mah).  Possible to run smaller than 4400?  And is it possible to run as low as 35c?  I know the higher C the better but I usually have a couple of cheaper batteries for set up/testing.

I'm running GensAce 60C 5s (5000Mah) and 60C 6S (5300MaH) in the E5.  My 6S packs(3) have over 120 cycles each on them and still balance perfectly.  The 5S (2) packs have about 90 cycles  each on them and and still balance perfectly as well.  The other thing to consider with running lighter packs is balance (fore and aft) on your E5.  When using the 6S packs my battery has to be positioned forward of the battery tray about  1 1/4 inches in order to balance the helicopter.  With lighter packs you are going to have to position your battery even further forward.  You may want to hold off on soldering up your ESC until you decide on a battery so that you can determine the proper length for your ESC wiring to the battery.   I order my GensAce batteries from hobbypartz.com and have had very good service and prompt shipping.  Hope this helps.

Gotcha, so don't solder the esc until I have it attached to the Heli.  But what if I just have the wire a little extra longer to make sure it will be well?  I will probably wait, just seeing if that was an option too.

If you leave the wires too long they interfere with the canopy if they are too short it makes connecting battery difficult. It's best to have all of your electronic components on hand when starting your build as it makes determining wire routing and placement of components easier IMHO.

Gotcha.  I was going to have everything soldered before the build but I can wait.
Also, having a batter like 4000 mah would be ok then right?  I know in one video a 4400 is used.  Eventually I'll get some 5000mah but am waiting to catch a good deal on those but I see a good deal on a nice 4000mah. Just making here its not too low/light.

A batteries potential to deliver energy is it's "C" rating.  The higher it's "C" rating the more current it can deliver.  MaH of your battery pack is going to determine how long a battery can deliver it's rated voltage and current.  A lower MaH battery is going to provide shorter flight times than one with a higher MaH. As different manufactures batteries weights vary greatly it would be difficult for me to answer your question about about a 4000 MaH pack.  My only reason for mentioning the weight was to prevent you from cutting your ESC wires too short in the event that you choose a light weight pack that need to be placed very far forward.  Maybe someone else flying a 4000 pack can help us out.

I'm using 4400mah 6s 65c gens ace packs. I've heard a lot of good things about them from a lot of people so I got a couple to try out. Unfortunately the weather here hasn't been kind plus work has kept me busy so I'm hoping to maiden my e5 after the holidays.

I'm running Pulse Ultra packs...awesome batteries.

I'll be running mine on 12s 2600 45C batteries.

Stephen, I hope your weather clears up soon.  It would be great if you could maybe post a picture of the CG position of your battery pack as a baseline for a 4400mah pack.  The Gens Ace packs really seem to come to life after about 6-8 cycles which is a normal break in period I would guess.  Other than the balancing wires being a bit fragile I have no complaints.  I have began to use these AB clips from EP Buddy and have not had any further problems with the balance connectors.  See the Link: http://epbuddy.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=26_13&products_id=228 (http://epbuddy.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=26_13&products_id=228)

Yeah I'm going for the best C rating I can find.  I forgot that different companies have different weights, so you just meant the CG is the thing to watch for.  How big of a battery would the E5 be able to fit? 6000mah or just 5500mah?  The biggest I will go is 5000 but just asking in case someone else might need the info in the future.  Because of the weather I might get a smaller pack or two and settle for shorter flights until nicer weather.

I have been VERY impressed with the Opti-Power packs. They are currently the only manufacture that I know of that gives you true 'C' ratings for their packs in the exact configuration you purchase them in. I have been flying their 30C 4300mAh packs all summer back to back with the Thunder Power 65C 4400mAh packs and they are virtually identical except for the Opti-Power are about 1/2" shorter than the TP. I have let quite a few other people try them and they are virtually identical, if not a tiny bit better than the TP. That is tough for me to admit, as I am a die-hard TP guy. As we have gone into some cold weather, I will say the Opti-Power aren't effected quite as much as the TP by the cold, but that would be splitting hairs.

As they say, the proof is in the pudding and the pudding is good! How good? Try $114.99 !!!
Want more? Their 50C packs will be available soon, if not already available.

Nice, may have to try one out.  Around the same price as Pulse.  About the same price as Turnigy nano-tech which I have had great success with as mentioned before.  I remember with my previous trex 450 I would fly a different brand pack (forgot what) and then the nano tech. Big difference and never had them puff.  That was back when I didn't realize the packs should cool down before charging.  I would fly and then charge immediately. Not going to do that again but they were pretty nice.  It would be short but any thoughts in going as small as 4000mah?

You can basically go about as low as you want, but the flight time is going to drop and the biggest thing to consider is the overall amperage the pack can handle. For example, let's assume we have three 50C packs; 3800mAh, 4400mAh and 5000mAh. The true amperage (assuming capacity and 'C' ratings are correct) would be 190, 220 and 250 Amps respectively.

If you want to run really low capacity packs, it would be worth offsetting that with a higher 'C' rated pack. Just keep in mind 'C' ratings aren't always true. The typical way manufacturers rate a pack is to take a single cell, do a test in optimum conditions and use that for all packs made from that type of cell. When you assemble packs, the 'C' rating is different from a single cell. On top of this you have the "average" of the tests conducted, then marketing comes in.  I like having a real number based on the true capabilities of a pack based on the worse condition, not a "high average" result. That is why the Opti-Power packs are rated "so low" in comparison to others, but still perform as well or in many cases better.

Okay, almost off the soap-box... I firmly believe we could all benefit from a third party certification of batteries to give them their true 'C' rating. The mobile audio world adopted a system like that about eight years ago due to many companies coming up with crazy power ratings for their amplifiers that were no where near reality... much like our Li-Po market currently. It was insane to see how many "1000 watt" amplifiers were really 200 watt under the new cert process!!!

Good comparison to car audio.  I remember seeing how a Legacy amp was rated at 1000 watts, but a lower rated Fosgate or JL outperformed it.

Yes, it was crazy. I designed speakers for Kicker from 2003-2009. I did some sound quality competitions before that (not rattle your head, just high end sq) and it was crazy how you would run a giant 650 watt amp to power a 150 watt midrange because you only ran it at 8 ohms to have maximum damping and headroom. Inversely,  a small "200 watt" high end sub amp with a robust power supply was all you needed for the low end. It is all about clean power and plenty of head room!

Now I am working on some home audio magic, but it can get out of hand quick!!!

Oh yeah I know.  Over the summer I thought about updating the Bose system in my C6. But then the price kept going higher and higher.  I decided to primarily listen to th engine and use the money for the E5.  I think I made the right choice lol.
I came close to getting Kicker in the door speakers though.  But the problem is that updating those speakers would then make the bass disappear so I would have to get a sub also.  Just started getting to high.

I would say money would probably be better spend on exhaust for the C6 and let it make music with your right foot!

Having said that, I heard one a while back with a complete Focal sound system and it was really nice! Really expensive, but really nice.

PLEASE DON'T MENTION THE FOCAL SERIES!!! I found one on sale and almost jumped on it this past summer.  I instead did more exhaust stuff. Already had magnaflow on there but changed to an x pipe and got a bigger CAI (carbon fiber hurricane).
Going to heck batteries at the local hobby store, see if they have any deals. I only get to go there once a year when I am here in Huntsville.

Focal- that is why I don't have more helicopters! I am just wrapping up my full Focal install in the SUV/Heli hauler. They are my favorite mids/highs, but I added their amps to this set up. So far so good.

Where are you located Inner3?

I'm in Montgomery, AL.  I come to Atlanta a couple of times a month which was another appealing thing about Synergy, the headquarters are near by.
I don't plan on buying anymore helis for quite some time. Most of 2012 I bought an average of a Heli each month, then sold most of them to buy the E5.  Helped with Heli know how but won't do that again.  So maybe some money will go towards a set of new speakers.  I have the z140 and love it.
