E7 tail shaft play/gearing
« on: December 27, 2012, 08:41:47 PM »
Hey everyone i have a couple questions:

1. I noticed about 0.5-0.75mm play in my tail shaft ie: i can push the tail shaft in and out a little less that 1mm I'd say. Is this normal or am I missing some sort of spacer?

2. I am running the scorpion 4525-520 ultimate motor with a 14 tooth pinion (the included pinion). According to the castle link I am not even hitting 5000 watts peak. Is this because my motor isn't spinning up enough. The gov wont let me run 1600rpm which I would like in normal mode and this is due to high gear ratio I believe. Would it be better to switch to a 12 tooth pinion to get in better operating range?? Also, how much pitch are you all using? I am using +-13 degrees right now.

Some input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah of you want low head speed I would strongly recommend the 12t pinion. I have the 500kv LE motor in mine with 12t it works great.

Geoffrey, just checked the tail shaft on my E7 and it has no in / out play.  something must be out of place.  My 7 has 337 flights on it.

I would use a head-speed calculator to figure out which pinion will get you closest to your desired head speed while at your desired motor RPM.  This will give you the best efficiency and power combination.   Your main gear has 116 teeth.  Here is a link to a good head-speed calculator: http://www.readyheli.com/headspeed-calculator.html

If you are running a Castle link I would use there head speed calculator in the speed control software.

I use mr Mel's calc and it is ok but after doing the set up on my castle speed controller it told me to use a different pinion it get the most efficiently out of my system.
