Title: N5c Build!
Post by: Chris "CSpaced" Mulcahy on September 23, 2012, 11:31:20 PM
What up guys!

Build thread! I know, they're done to death, but you can't keep a good build thread down!

So here's what I've got:

N5c
NovaRossi .57
CGY750
O.S. Powerboost II
BLS253/BLS251
Life 2100mah 10C

Why am I using this equipment? Because I already have it  ;) I've read through the tips and tricks, and will be starting as soon I've recovered from the Heli Extravaganza (awesome event!).

Photos will ensue!

I know! It's amazing how time just whizzes by when you're catching up!

I am sorting out some bearings for the tail belt "mod" to raise the belt slightly in the boom. Should have them shortly. Soon as I get underway I will get some pics up!

Great. Maidened mine today. Got 4 flights on it. Starting leaning the OS out on the second flight. Running good but I will need to lean out the top a bit more.
Really liking the N5C. GY701 Gov working well.  Hc3-extreme was flawless. Had to turn down the agility on both the tail and cyclic.
Keep us posted on your progress.

Cheers

Here we are at the end of day one. Everything went together so quickly that I forgot to take photos along the way  ;D

Things I like:
- Sensor magnets in the clutch bell with the sensor mount on the side frame. I cannot rave about this enough, I love this layout!
- Quality: All of the aluminum parts are beautifully machined, and I haven't had a single bad part yet.

Things me likey not so much:
- The rubber strips that the fuel tank mounts into. No matter what I do, I just can't get it to sit right without the edges flaring out.
- Skid pipe ends, I can't seem to get them in there without a hammer - I'll just leave them off.

I'll get more done tomorrow and post up some more pics!

Very nice, thanks for sharing! When I was putting the strips on for the fuel tank first I warmed up the rubber to make it a little more mailable. Then I took a small dot of CA at each corner to hold it in place. I let it set up in place for a couple hours before I slid the fuel tank in and now it sits in there evenly without flare.

Another option is to hold it in place with some of those squeezable binder clips for a couple hours and then remove them and slide the tank in.  I think the biggest thing is just getting the rubber to conform to the frames at first.

+1 to what Brandon Suggested.  I used my trusty monokote heat gun to warm the rubber seal.
Coming along nicely Chris.  You'll have it done by the weekend for sure!

Hi guys,

Just got registered, thanks Chris for the link. I purchased my N5c kit a week after IRCHA and have been surprised at my financial creativity toward obtaining the necessary components to complete it. Just ordered my Outrage BL9180 cyclic servos yesterday and now the only major component I need is a gyro, which I was all settled on the Futaba 750 until seeing the HeliCommand in action at Triple Tree! Dang, that might slow my maiden by a few weeks but that rescue feature of the SX is awesome and just what I need!

On the fuel tank trim, I was able to roll the excess rubber to the inside of the sideframes so it is just not visible, we'll see if it stays in place after a few flights.

I will post some pics of my progress soon. :)

I like these suggestions, I'll pop the tank back out and use a heat gun to get it to conform better. Thanks!

I tried the heat gun and clips trick, and the rubber trim around the fuel tank now fits MUCH better. Thanks for the tip guys. Motor is now mounted, along with the bellcrank assembly. I carefully wicked some thin C/A into the exposed part of the carbon frame where the bellcrank bearings are inserted. This gave me a tough press fit for the bearings, resulting in absolutely no play.

I've gotten as far as the tail now, and have just about got it all taken apart ready for reassembly. More to follow tomorrow!

More things I like:
- The fan shroud design. It's adjustable front to back, and has some cool duct work to increase efficiency!

A Curiosity:
The anti rotation bracket has a notch in it, and I can't figure out why...

Chris,

By NO means am I doubting your skills as a builder, Just make sure your motor-clutch bell-starter shaft alignment is perfect, and follow Matt's sequence of tightening. Can't wait to see this in the air!! N5c is truly the best Nitro 600 class on the Market,And I'm not just saying that!!  ;)

My first introduction to Kevin was at Birmingham when I asked for assistance with a clutch/starter shaft issue on an N5 that I had purchased used.
Turned out to be missing shims between the engine and mount. I really learned a lot in regards to aligning everything. That made the build on the most recent N5C painless. I did check and recheck alignment though before the first flight. That really paid off! Flawless first flight.
So Kevin said to the tenth power:-)

No worries on the motor mount, everthing is squared and spinning freely.  8)

I woke up with a cold this morning, so I didn't get too much done. I put the tail assembly back together and have it temporarily mounted to the boom. Bearings are greased, and screws are threadlocked!

Funny you should mention that, my buddy and I were just discussing the fact that the manual shows trailing edge grips. A little searching around here provided the solution, so everything is set!
Title: Re: N5c Build!
Post by: Chris "CSpaced" Mulcahy on October 08, 2012, 10:41:15 PM
Now that my cold is clearing up, the build has resumed. I've modified the tail with some extra bearings per Matt's suggestion. This raises the belt enough to prevent any slap on the inside of the boom. I epoxied the boom plastic ends on to the carbon boom supports, and have made sure the one way auto bearing was thoroughly lubed. Next up, the swash and rotor head.

I have been making lightning speed progress on my N5c, so much that I didn't have time to post my progress before now! And a month ago I feared it would be spring before I'd be flying it, amazing what a bit of intention will get accomplished. :)

Last post I had ordered, and was expecting, my cyclic servos, as you can see from the attached pics I'm way past that point now and all I really need is a 6V regulator for my throttle servo, which with any luck will arrive by Friday.

I've got it outfitted with:

Engine: OS MAX 55HZ Hyper w/OS Power Boost pipe.
Servos: Cyclic-Outrage BL9180 (x3), Tail-Outrage BL9188, Throttle-Futaba S9650.
Gyro: HeliCommand HC3sX.
Blades: Main-Rail 606mm, Tail-Rail 96mm.
Radio: Aurora 9 channel 2.4GHz & Optima 7 receiver.
Battery: Venom 2200mAh 2 cell 7.4V Lipo

Thanks to Matt Botos for checking out my assembly in progress at Triple Tree, I feel confident about the engine, clutch & starter shaft alignment in addition to my general building skills thus far. I still have to complete the tail belt mod to help prevent the belt from slapping the boom at the tail but I've got the parts to do that.

A note on the canopy installation. The mounting pin upgrade is great except for a clearance issue at the post adjacent to the muffler so instead of cutting the canopy I decided to use one of the original screw knobs. Also, those dang black rubber grommets kept soaking up the silicone grease I applied so I swapped them with some white TT Raptor grommets which seem to work fine. I did consider that once some nitro exhaust got on the black ones the problem may go away but I had these on hand so I used them. I did however leave one original grommet in the canopy for the screwin fastener.

I have yet to resolve easy access to the power switch which I mounted below the tail servo...I am tempted to cut a hole in the canopy for that. Any comments or ideas supporting that or other methods?

If my regulator arrives along with some nice weather I plan on doing my maiden flight this weekend! (I think Chris will be joining me with his!) :)

Very nice and congrats are in order of course. For my power switch I literally just put it right behind the cheek of the canopy so that I can reach in with my index finger and turn it on or off.

A couple of things I forgot to mention. Once I get my regulator I plan to get the rest of my wiring cleaned up & secure at which time I'll secure my receiver as well. Also, I put it on the scale yesterday and it came in at 7lbs 12oz. I meant to weigh my old Raptor 50V2 just for kicks but it is a moot point!

Looking good Bob.  Glad to see another Helicommand user.  Maybe next year at IRCHA we can get Danny to do a Helicommand user photo :-)

I eliminated the need for the switch up front by using a Gryphon regulator with a remote switch which I have placed at the rear of the right side of the fuse.  Works fabulous and the switch has a flashing light system to alert to low voltage.

I also tried the pin conversion on both the front and rear mounts.  Removed the front ones for the same reason.  A bit tight on the muffler side.  Went back to the thumb screws on the front only.  Pins on the back.

Keep us posted on the maidens (both you and Chris).

Cheers
Alan

Thanks for the input Alan & Brandon. Alan I considered that but I had to STOP the spending (for now at least.) Brandon, can you elaborate on where you placed your switch, or do you have gynecologist fingers?

I completed my tail belt mod (see pic) but according to my order tracking information my voltage regulator may not arrive until Monday. :(  :'(

On a good note the sun came out today here in North Carolina and I got some beautiful pics of my heli! Hence the attached & an Avatar pic now.  8)

Got a little more done myself today. I stripped and lubed the bearings in the rotor head, and made sure all of the balls on the swash were thread locked. I've actually ordered some more of the longer balls to add to the inner swash. According to Matt, this will make the CGY750 a lot happier. The CGY750 is mounted, still loving the governor sensor mount! I also routed all of my cables so that they aren't rubbing against any carbon, and I'll be mounting the receiver on the underside of the battery tray once I pick up some more velcro.  I've got to reset the CGY750, center all the servos, and then make up the pushrods and do final setup. Almost there!

Looking good! For my switch I just have the actual part that you push up and down facing towards the back of the heli with some double sided tape. It's got just enough clearance behind the fan shroud that I can touch it but it's still protected by the canopy.

Thanks Brandon...That's got me thinking better on it now.

Alan, any particulars on setting the HC3sX up as far as the stabilization & Rescue feature? (Chris has installed the SX on his Goblin so fortunately I'll have his assistance, other than it being a different heli.) I have been through the set-up wizard and figure my next step is getting it in the air although I imagine a bit of my attention at first will be getting the new engine tuned. The collective is set at 12 degrees both positive & negative and cyclic is set at 8 degrees. (Keep in mind, I am pretty much a novice when it comes to my flying skills, hence the desire for the rescue feature!) I was amazed and impressed at how precise all the linkages & mechanisms are, all I really had to do was shorten the pitch links slightly, very nice.

I woke up with a solution to my temporary voltage regulator dilema...I'll just fly with a 6V battery pack, duh! :)

We'll be sure to pack equipment to take plenty of video & stills at the field on Saturday!

Yes sometimes we don't see the forest for the trees. What tail servo did you use. Some don't like 6v.

I will post my setup file from the hc3 this evening. I did not use the SX on this one. You will at least be able to view my settings.
Be sure you are getting full deflection on the tail.
This was my third Hc3 setup so if you have questions just ask.

Thanks Alan,

I'm  using an Outrage Torq BL9188 on the tail and was getting full deflection on it during set up, as a matter of fact that was with a LiFe 6.6V battery. I just thought about it, Chris uses a LiFe 6.6V on his Goblin with the same servos, so I'm sure there will be no problems. The Futaba S9650 throttle servo did not "smoke" or smell hot during set up either.

I look forward to seeing your settings, nothing like learning from others!

Thanks again.

Not true, I run a high voltage setup on the Goblin, two cell lipo!

Your HC3SX is ready to go Bob, you just have to go fly it and figure out where your head gain needs to be set for optimum performance. Once that's done, we can assign that default channel over to the rescue mode and you'll be all set.

Alrighty, pushrods are done! It kinda has that steam locomotive look now  ;D

I've switched out a pair of the stock inner swash balls for some of the longer ones. Now it's just a case of programming the gyro, cyclic and collective pitch, governor etc. I haven't snugged down the swash follower yet, as I want to make sure all the pushrods are square before I set it. I'm looking forward to starting it up real soon!

Well, my luck is apparently still hanging in there...My voltage regulator was on the front porch when I got home today!!! (Maybe I should go buy a lottery ticket...NOT!)

I just completed tucking in all my wiring & doing the final mounting of the battery and other than programing flight modes into my radio I am ready to go to the field in the morning!

Chris, I see what you mean about the Tweetsie RR, good one ;D. Cool that you are finally getting to use those servo arms (or discs as the are.)

We're thinking it may have been a mounting issue that caused an unexpected tip over on the ground. Very minor damage, Bob will be back in the air by the weekend.
Title: Re: N5c Build!
Post by: Bob Heybrock on October 16, 2012, 06:48:50 AM
Thanks Chris for posting the pics...and not all of them! :-[ Anyway, yeah had a slight mishap as mentioned above but I'm not discouraged (one doesn't stay in this hobby long if that comes easily.)

Saturday we learned that the thin foam was needed to mount the gyro, which made it a very short day but Sunday was much more productive. As I leaned the engine out the heli developed a drift to the left that worsened even more following the next few clicks leaner on the engine. We richened it back up and the problem seemed to go away and that is when I was attempting to lift off and it tipped over to the left. Fortunately the ground was soft and the main blades survived with only a few scuffs, the tail boom snapped and the 25mm boom support screws were slightly bent, one servo arm broke and the pitch & swash plate links were damaged. Mainshaft & head axle unharmed, pretty minor I'd say!

I learned one thing real quick however, FBL likes to FLY not sit on the ground and I thought I had that pretty well under control but maybe not completely. In addition I am going to remount the gyro slightly rearwards at the top rear corner of the cyclic servo tray instead of being somewhat centered over the rear two servos. I think some flex in the tray may have been allowing the gyro to move in relation to the side-frames and with seeing the difference the thin foam made it makes sense that more rigid mounting will cure it.

Danny with HeliCommand was very helpfull both days and he is sending me a new gyro just to be sure there is not a problem with it, which I feel is above & beyond in service, thanks to Danny on that!

I ordered my link rods yesterday, had an extra boom (from my initial order) and just completed replacing it so it is not looking so sad any more, soon I will be ready to get back out to the field, pray for nice weather! ;D

Yea.  Danny told me to throw out the stock pads and use the 3M type.  Works great!  Guess I was fortunate enough to have Danny there at Heli Extravaganza where I did that part of the build.  I was just about to use the stock tape when he intervened.
I also mounted the Gyro back closer to the main shaft.  I wanted more clearance for the wires.  They were rubbing on the canopy in the forward position.

Danny is a class act and I'm glad he was able to help.

Cheers,
Alan

Chris, those are some beautiful shots! I especially like the blurred outer frame focus of the canopy!

Update: Ok so I (Chris) got my N5c in the air Sunday long enough to determine two things, one the gyro placement seems to be good and two, I missed the fact of a slightly bent main shaft following the tip over last week, dang! :P Upon disassembly I also discovered a problem I created with the elevator bell crank assembly so that was a good thing that I may not have found for some time, if at all. I forget that it has been about 8 years since I built my Raptor and I guess, fortunately, I did not have a lot of experience with crash repair until recently and I assumed (there's that word) since the head axle was OK the main shaft was too, uh NO!

Had a great day at the field anyway watching Chris get his dialed in (almost) and getting some flights on my Raptor. :)

I am figuring that since I am having a bit of trouble initially it means my N5c will have a long and prosperous life!

Hope this weather holds out!

Bob,
If it makes you feel any better...

I swapped out the HC for a VBAR. I decided to use the HC on the forthcoming E5 and since the VBAR has GOV that would be a good swap.  Unfortunately that idea hit me around 3am sunday morning.  Well at 4am I am installing the VBAR.  I have done a bunch of VBAR installs but only two with nitro gov.
Well I neglected to check the direction of throw on the throttle servo.
Needless to say I was surprised Sunday morning at the field.  Had a hot start and trashed the clutch liner :(
Stupid..Stupid! I knew better.

Cheers
Alan

Been there, done that! There's nothing like the smell of burnt clutch liner in the morning!  :-[

I did such a good job that I didn't even have to carve out any of the old one.  Nothing left.
Of course I had to clean off all of that green dust! :D

Yikes, did the clutch bell make it out ok?

I think the worst part is having to clean that dust up, it gets everywhere!

That is the first thing I checked.  Clutch bell is good.

Hey Alan,

Yeah, it makes me feel a little better, I hate it for you of course but I was thinking earlier I seem to be the only one posting my troubles & others are posting pics & videos of flying...So I thank you for that.

I still think my N5c is going to be tons of fun and very reliable in the very near future! I hate that the time of year is coming when nice days for flying are more few and far between and I have not been able to take advantage of them, such is life! Damn things looks good though, even when not flying!

Let us know when yours is back in the air and I'll keep you posted as well.

Later.

Hey Alan,

Every trade or profession has their little phrases, I'm sure you've heard "lefty-losey, righty tighty", yes? (I won't go into the four plumbers rules.) I digress, the following is the one I apply to OS Engine carbs "clockwise-CLOSED" Maybe this might help in the future!

Goofing around between renders at work!

Small update on my N5c, been flying it as hard as I can, and have found that I will probably need to put a header tank on it. Without a pumped engine, I'm getting rich runs at the beginning but leaning out towards the end. Adding a header tank isn't a big deal, but will have to do until I can get a pumped engine!

Alrighty, I've added a Hayes 2oz header tank. I used some double sided industrial foam tape to secure the header tank to the main tank, as there aren't really any options for adding a mounting bracket. It will be a few days before I actually get to try it out, and I'll report back when I do!

Looks Clean No Doubt, However keep in mind that if the gets fuel soaked or as the tank expands and contracts do to crank case preasure based on the engine your running. Also something to think about, If you were inverted and that little guy came off it's going through the Blades. Not saying all these will happen just thinking outside the box. There are a couple of options and Mods and if interested I would be more than willing to chat on the Phone to better explain.  Nice Build!! You are gonna love this Bird!! ;)

Best Regards,

Kevin

Thanks Kevin, I already love it!

Just trying to keep things simple for now. I'm not worried about the tank expanding/contracting as this is not a pressurized fuel system. The only pressure the tank gets is from the muffler, which isn't enough to expand the fuel tank significantly. I'll be checking it before each flight, as soon as I see any problems I will deal with them.

I'm off to go fly it this morning, I'll let you know how it goes.

Got several flights on it today, and the header tank helped out a lot. I'm now getting consistent runs on the engine from start to finish, so now I can just have fun with it! I plan to keep an eye on the foam tape, any signs of it starting to give and it will be replaced.

OK, so I took a break after my tip over, it freaked me out a bit and I decided to burn a couple gallons of fuel through my old Raptor 50 and work on some basic skills but with the Heli Blowout coming up there was no way I was not going to be taking and flying my new Synergy there so yesterday and today I flew several tankfulls and she is solid as a rock even in some wind, I love this machine! I am totally ready to shelve the Raptor now! Hope to see many of you in Orlando in a few days!:)

A couple of photos from OHB. I can proudly say that my N5c was the first model in the USA to be flown with the new Futaba 14SG! Woot!

I gotta get an N5c! I love nitro!

Chris, is that 14SG software (radio menus) the exact same as an 8FG? Aside from the telemetry stuff?

For the most part it's the same. There are a few new menus, but the majority is the same as the 8FG.

Maybe do a vid? overview and features? would be neat! lol

Hows the stick height and feel (8FGish?) or is it different completely? Also, the switch placement; the extra space feel much better than the 8FG? Oh, is it a thicker radio than the 8FG? The 8FG is a pretty thin radio compared to my 12FGH.  Coming from spektrum it was a huge transistion and hard for me to get use to... I hate to say it but the DX7 felt good in my hands BUT boy does it feel cheap compared to my 12FGH!  But going Sbus I was done with spektrum.

I don't actually have a 14SG, otherwise I would gladly show off its features. The one I used was Futaba's demo model that I snagged during OHB, copied my 8FG program to it, and then flew my N5c before anyone realised it was missing!  :D

The sticks are adjustable just like the 8FG, and I usually lengthen them a little for my "pinch" style of flying. The sticks are pretty much the same as the 8FG. The biggest difference that I could feel, was the comfy rubber grips on the back, and the switch spacing on the top. There is room on the shoulder switches to lay your finger in between without risking an accidental switch flip. Another cool thing is the vibration alert! Came in very handy at the noisy fly in.

I've lost count of the gallons now, but my N5c is still going strong and taking everything I can throw at it! This video was from today, practicing stationary inverted pirouettes and swing the tail from backwards to forwards during inverted hurricanes. Fun, fun, fun!

Wow, it's hard to believe that my N5c is two years old now! It's still going strong, and I don't see any signs of it wearing out any time soon. This is one strong bird, and I thoroughly enjoy flying it! The only thing I've done to it is lowered the head, and changed some of the swash balls out to give a little more cyclic.

I gave it a little upgrade this past week, and installed an onboard glow igniter. No more dead glow drivers for me!  ;D
