Title: successful maiden
Post by: anthony on October 22, 2015, 08:33:16 AM
finally got all my little issues sorted and did the maiden this morning .
I am using a cgy750 which I took out of my goblin when I sold it and wasn't 100% sure if everything was reset , but all my checking and double checking didn't find anything that I thought I should worry about.
so after checking the correction directions for the last time I spooled up and nothing unexpected happened, it was on the floor spinning and not trying to flip or correct the wrong way , so increasing the throttle it lifted of into a nice steady hover , into iu1 and it just sat there , so far it has been one of the most sublime maiden's for me, I tried a pitch pump and it went straight as an arrow up , so I tried it coming down too , again straight , piroette's while a little too fast for me were perfectly flat , the only issue with the tail is a little bounce on the stops but that should be easy to tune out, next up was flips and rolls , again too fast but nice with a little wiggle on the stops . inverted was just as stable as upright so all is great
coming from the goblin which was heavy this feels really light in the air and hangs there for ages , this really is my kind if heli, as a final test (only have one battery atm) I thought I'd try the goblin's nemesis , elevator bounce on stops , no matter what I did with the goblin it was always there , a quick forward and back on the elevator stick and it stops and changes direction with no bounce , there is a small wiggle from the head ( I believe) but the tail moves up and down very very nicely , all this with the default settings . I understand now why there is such praise for the e5 and all synergy products actually, I really flies very nicely and is exactly what I am looking for in a heli,
on a final note I am glad to have got rid of the goblin 630 it just wasn't for me and I had no excitement for it , the e5 on the other hand I am excited to see how it will perform once I get more comfortable with it
sorry for the long post I am just happy and wanted to share

That great to hear.  The E5 to me, was so confidence inspiring because of how nice it flies, that it was the model that helped me advance my skills more than any other.  It's just an overall very nice flying model, for sure.

Nice testimonial for the E5.  My first Synergy was the N7........I highly recommend it if you are Nitro inclined in any way shape or form.  I also have an E5 and absolutely love it as well.

not really had much luck with the e5 , I still really like it and am eager to fly it but things are conspiring against me.
third flight after 2 very successful trim flights I got a bit more adventurous and was very surprised to find that a lot of my flying was well within the capabilities of the heli, really impressed so far I landed after around 5 minutes, mah telling me to land , and noticed that the esc was very hot  , motor too , come to that, swapped batteries and tried a fouth flight , but the motor just stuttered and wouldn't get going , I figured it was just too hot , so I let it cool down , next day I tried again and the motor spooled up no problem , took off and tried a flip , at the (almost) full negative collective part of the flip the motor slowed and once upright it picked back up , tried it again and same thing, flipped inverted it was fine so third flip and this time the motor quit while inverted  , I assumed it would pick up again and started to feed in the collective but it had stopped and so I decided an auto wouldn't hurt, managed to get it down just breaking a skid but founf that it auto's surprisingly well, back home after checking everything I noticed that the caps had come off of the esc , so eventually I sent it back to castle for some re capping and a check up .
castle have been very good and told me that there was some weird stuff going on with my throttle channel and that the esc was done and needed to be replaced, they let me upgrade from the edge 130 lv to the edge 120 hv for a little more than the cost of the replacement 130, I also picked up one of their vertigo motors as i'm not sure about the one I have , and a short in the motor could be the problem also the exssesive heat that was generated in the third flight could have damaged it too . better safe than sorry,
so after 3 and a bit flights i'm waiting on castle, hopefully I will be back in the air soon , this really felt like a perfect match for me and i'm eager to find out
see you soon

is that in the e5 or the stretch, if its the e5 is it too powerful for it?

true , let me ask it in a different way then , i'm assuming youre running 12 s , does it make it heavy in the air , because the thing I noticed instantly with the 6s version( apart from the heat) was the lightness in the air especially when I had to do the auto

so, castle told me that the 120 hv edge esc would be fine , and that I need to use a 12t pinion, which I now have , its nearly all wired back up , but I have a couple of questions.
1: I can't really afford to have this happen again , how do I know if the gearing is correct for the heli, I'm running 6s with a castle vertigo 550 motor(1175 kv I think) 12t pinion 119main(?) what headspeed should I be aiming for ? oh and rail 550 blades
2: can I continue using ec5 for the connectors or is there a better alternative , the esc wire just about fits into the cup:
3: is there an ideal temperature range for the esc,
I know I will think of some more questions but this is enough to be getting on with ,
thank you

I ran that exact setup in mine. I would run 2250 with that setup.  I was (and still am) using EC5 connectors.

so , another successful re-maiden this morning, I tried 2150 and 2250 hs , I like 2250 better , very responsive with the cgy , I will have to increase collective as it feels a little slow but cyclic and rudder are spot on for me . I flew for 5 minutes until my mah alarm went off so that's pretty good too...I will have to check at home what the temp of the esc was , the motor was warm (not hot like last time) and the esc was warmer than I like but again I could keep my finger on it for a while so maybe its ok , I did do back to back flights so that might have something to do with it, so now I just have a small bobble with cyclic which should be fairly easy to get rid of, up and down is straight  (mostly) and just a very slight tail kick but I'm happy with that so let the tuning commence

so good news and not so good news this morning, I feel like I'm having a little bad luck with this heli but I still love it it flies fantastically and once sorted I can see it being my main heli
so this morning I did a little tuning , the esc is behaving itself and I had a very good flight , right up to the point where the tail let go , it was at the end of the flight (luckily) and I had just leveled out prior to landing when the tail started spinning , I didn't panic I hit th , and was amazed that I managed to auto from about 40 feet with no problem, this heli really does auto extremely well, on closer inspection everything appears to be intact apart from the tail drive pulley which is spinning freely , never had one of those let go before , but at least its an easy fix and I found out that I can auto in an emergency, I will order the part today and hopefully that will be that

just checked the manual and there is a pin that holds the spur gear on , that probably fell out , so its an even easier fix, cool

Score! Always a good feeling when u are forced into a situation & pull it off! Had a few of those moments lately myself... Cold solder joint pop'd loose while inverted.. Saved it.. High needle came loose from the motor while inverted.. Saved it.. Got too low inverted and scrub'd the head'n'blades causing a strip'd main gear.. Saved it.. Lol, my luck may be running out. Good job bruh!

the pin in the tail box, or front trans?

what I suggest is running the set screw (the set screw that holds that pin in place) down and visually confirming that you can see it in the hole where the bevel gear pin goes. no burs or obstructions stopping it from engaging on that pin like it should. then pull it back out, put your gear on the shaft, install the pin correctly, then clean the setscrew, and the threads in the output shaft with acetone or denatured alcohol, (make sure everything is bone dry) use locktight, and put the setscrew back in with medium/hard force. not enough to break the driver, but get it tight. be careful, its easy to break those tiny drivers.

its the pin in the spur gear in the front transmission , I think its just a push fit, I can spin the tail with the mushroom gear on the front spindle and it all spins freely , except the spur gear , that's stationary so I'm assuming the pin has fallen out , I will check later on tonight when I get home and take it apart

I will have a look when I take it apart tonight, I might be wrong, with a quick glance it looks like the umbrella gear is still attached and the spur gear isn't , but like I said I will check again tonight

I had a quick look at lunch and you are 100% correct mike, the pin is indeed missing out of the umbrella gear , and now I know what I have to do to fix it , thank you

no problem man. just do like I said, ensure that the setscrew does indeed go far enough to engage the pin, then clean, dry, and assemble with locktight. also, ensure that you get the M3 locknut back on good also. glad you got it figured out!

another successful re-re-maiden , I am going to check the pin to make sure it hasn't moved . I did hear back from castle and it appears that the esc is performing well and has no problems , so another positive there
I really like the way the e5 flies , it was a little windy today but the heli didn't bat an eyelid , I also tried my x2 which was hilarious climbing and diving 10 feet due to the wind so I am very impressed with the e5 being so light and still coping well with the wind, well hopefully the bad luck has all played out and I can get on with enjoying the e5 , this one is going to stay in my fleet whatever happens , I know its a keeper

quick update , I have had a t least 20 flights now without a hitch , I really like this heli, I decided to have another go tis morning, I got out to my field and and while I was looking over it I noticed a hole in one of the tail blades, I don't remember shutting the tail in the boot but that's what it looked like, almost like a gunshot, on closer inspection I found teeth prints in it, then the penny dropped, we just got a new(1 year old) puppy , now I'm laughing :)

The dog must have felt the need to "Mark" his territory, even with the Heli in the house.

:) I can't help but find a little humor in the conversation, but I feel for you both, mostly for Chris, a set of tail blades is pretty cheap, but ecs's can be pricey. I too have a dog but Rocky is a bit timid around the helis, he's came outside when I'm flying and he goes the other direction. I personally do not leave heli's on the floor, knowing me, I'd probable trip over it or something, but if I did and the dog did do something, I would be pretty pissed off, depending on what he did. I suggest finding a new location for storing your heli that is dog proof.

its not just the heli's in my house , we have to clear the floor of anything we don't want chewed, this week its been flip flops but only half of a pair , my wife now has 4 half pairs of them, baseboards too are being chewed so I think I got off fairly lightly , my older dog too is having his ears and legs gnawed on , he's not that happy either
