Title: New E5 Owner
Post by: LaDedric on January 06, 2017, 02:40:00 PM
Hello All,

My name is LaDedric and have an E5 in route from AMain.  This will be my first large scale heli build, so let me apologize now because I am sure I will be asking some of the same questions others have asked.  I will continue to use the search engine but I would like to get a more recent thought or two on the subject.    My plans are to build my E5 with the E5s 600mm extended kit (yet to be ordered).  I am now at the point of picking and motor, ESC, batteries, and BEC.

Please allow me a second to give a public thank you to Greg Jackson for his encouragement and help so far via e-mail.  I have been impressed with the time and support I have received from him.

What would you suggest for a starting setup for an E5s, the 606 or 626 blades? I would like to get at least a 4 plus minute mild 3d flight time if possible?  Can I use the popular 4035-560 motor or an I missing something?

If u r running 12s u should get good flight times on either of the blades.. I run 606s but on 6s.. it gives a nice light feel but my times are 3:30 a 4...

Hi,
I'm running the scorpion 4035-560 on 12s with 2x 3300 45c lipo flight packs and 626 mains in my E5s. I'm getting 5 minutes of sport flight and a little 3D at 2250 headspeed. Landing with 30% in the packs.
Its an awesome heli.

Wolf51 Thank you!  Which pinion are you using?
Using 13 tooth pinion, could go up to 2350-2400 headspeed with it (according to headspeed calculator) but am happy at 2250 right now.
I also fitted the 12/54 tooth tail speed up gears which takes tail ratio from 4.0:1 to 4.5:1,  using 96mm Rails on the tail and its rock solid!

Hate that I just saw this. School started back this week so things were hectic, but really glad you found the forum. I'm not too far away so let me know if you need any help!

This is my progress so far.  Do I need to change the spur gear in the front tail transmission (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170119/919e601ed8efbf151d4e06f4c4d0339d.jpg)

I would just run the stock gears...unless you are planning to run headspeeds lower than the sweet spot.  If you need any help feel free to email me, I may not be on here much in the next couple of days. But if you do not get an answer right away in the E5 portion of this forum feel free to hit me up.

LaDedric,

What headspeed range are you planning to run?
I see you wrote you plan to use a 560kv motor on 12s.
What ESC as well?

Thanks,
Robert

I am guessing the 2250 range.  I see a lot of talk going on about "slow headspeeds" but I am coming from a Trex 450l and that setup was purchased as a complete package in the box.  I am assuming I may be able to run it on a 6s pack later.

I am looking at the castle 120HV.

Is that headspeed to slow?

2250 is not too slow for 606 main blades.
2250 is the max governed rpm for the 12t motor pinion using the Castle gov.
The stock gear ratio will serve you well with 96mm tail blades.
If you are spending more time at lower headspeeds the 4.5 ratio may be desired.
This will largely depend on your flying style.

In the past I have run my 700 class helis on 6S instead of the 12S I normally ran them at.
Most ESCs will just run at 100% throttle output since the governed rpm cannot be reached.

I will look into the governor mode.  Will I still have to use the throttle curve in the radio?

What is it you'll be looking into for governor mode?
When using "Set RPM" on the Castle governor your throttle curve would be a straight line instead of a linear line or V curve.

I have not used a governor mode before.  Thank you for your help.  I just ordered the motor and will use the 12t pinion.

You must have known I was going to ask about the tail blades as well.

Thanks!

Depending on your flight style 96mm tail blades will serve you.
However if you are talking about flying hurricanes into funnels than the 4.5:1 tail ratio and 106mm tail blades should be installed.

Thanks!  My family and I had a great time at The Southern Heli Swarm 2017. I was surrounded by a wealth of knowledge and the needed help in finishing my first big bird.
