Finally maidened the N5c

OK, So I finally got to maiden the N5c today. Very smooth. Probably the 2nd smoothest heli I have flown. Controls feel locked in, even untweaked. Just setup per the manual. Flying old v-blades. Heli totally feels like an extension of my hands. No slop on any controls, quick response. Looks promising. Didn't get any 3d in, just a few circuits and inverted.

On a side note. My brand new os55hz went KA-BLAMMO. Its in the oven right now so I can get it apart and see what happened. Glow plug is intact. Bearings look ok from what I can see without taking engine apart yet.
No shiney metal parts, just dull casted powdery dust everywhere. piston maybe bad? I DUNNO.. I will see in about 20 min.
Thats just my luck. I'm like bad luck brian..

After running through my mind the events leading up to the engine. Im pretty sure I just had it too lean. My mixture control is parallel to the ground when viewed from the side of the heli. Which I did have to lean it a bit to get a descent idle. so i probably turned it 6-8  degrees clockwise from factory setting
So my thought process leads me to believe that I should have been richer on the mid , because i was a tad bit leaner on the mixture control. I was about 1.4-1.5 turns out. I know the manual states start @ 2 and work down. but the needles at 2 and factory setting on idle mixture was just blowing fuel out the pipe.
So I chalk it up to dumb thumbs/brain fart. Only replacing a piston and ring.
I feel stupid, I know better than that.
I was so excited i finally got to maiden the damn thing. I just plain ole forgot about the engine.
Oh well, at least it didn't totally destroy engine. (sigh)

The piston and ring showed up today for my 55.. Starting rebuild. Be flying again tomorrow.. A bit richer might I add..

 Great news on the Maiden of your N5c! unfortunate on the OS however.  this is just my personal opinion, If you had a Lean run to the point you started to detonate, I would recommend at least replacing the rear main bearing....The front one is very resilient just the rear is the one to really keep your eye on... again my opinion. I swear the greater heli powers that be just dont want me flying RC helis anymore.. Had the beastx do the swash tip to the left. Didn't do it on the intial first flight. I have had nothing but bad luck with RC helis for 3 years. All started after my trex 600 crashed and the blade came off and hit me in my nither region. 2 inches farther to the left and I would have been singing soprano. V-Blades HURT. Not throwing in the towel yet. Got a CGY750 sitting here in front of me. I know the Beastx is still good, I could change the tape to the 3m. Add a strap and try it. But... I just might save it for, if and when I get an e5. Damn helis

Sorry to hear. What mounting tape were you using? If it was the stock tape that came with the BeastX that could be why you had a problem.

Man that does sound like a string of bad luck.  Glad you are keeping a positive frame of mind.  I would change out the tape and add a metal isolation plate if you have one.

it was just getting light on the skids. the first time I got it into the air and it did it. Set it down, then was able to get it just about 2-3 inches up, saw swash tilt left. 3rd time was just light on skids, swash almost locked over left..
Its sitting on the table, took head off to check for bent parts, also when I was in the head went ahead and re greased everything, spindle is ok not bent, main shaft is ok and not bent, did find a ever so slightly notchy main bearing, so Ill go ahead and change it.
Brandon, was using stock tape. Just got back from wally world, bought some 3m. But im still gonna put the cgy750 on it

You can't go wrong with the CGY750 on the N5c. It has the best GOV around. I just switched out a helicommand for the CGY750 on my N5C so I would have gyro and GOV in one unit. Did a trim flight today. No vibes or issues.  Got my head gains up 92 with no wobbles.

Sorry to hear about your engine, I have the same set up and pretty much left my low speed adjustment alone as well as the midrange, which I really thought since its an upgraded feature would be messed with a bit more. I plan to tweak the low speed a tiny bit leaner because I do have a little rich gurgle comming off idle, I always try to err rich though. BTW, I just checked my high speed needle and it is at 1 & 1/4 turns, I'm at about 1000' above sea level. Is there a possibilty your break in period was too short?

I too had a similar tip over with my Heli Command HC-3sX but it was totally due to the mounting location. I didn't have it far enough rearward on top of the servo tray and it must have been flexing and receiving vibration from the engine. Initially it was OK but as I leaned the mixture it got worse, it began as a drift to the left while in flight and ended with a tip over spooling up resulting in a bent mainshaft, broken tail boom & linkages and a damaged top bearing, fortunately the ground was soft and my blades survived. Remounting as far back as possible seems to have completely cured the problem.

I hope things work out better in the future.
