Hey guys,

Been rockin the E5 for a few weeks now and loving it, im just curious what pinions you guys are using with the various motors for 6s, as i think im in no-mans land a little. :o :o

Im running CC Gov @ 2100,2200 and 2300rpm with the 14 tooth pinion, and think i may need to drop down to a 13 tooth pinion to find the sweet spot for my headspeeds.

I would appreciate your advise and your own setups also to compare.

Chris, a 14TP is eating up your flight time pretty quickly I would imagine.  I'm running a 12TP but my head speeds are a little lower than yours.  A 13TP would give you a little longer flight times and still keep you in the ball park as far is your head speeds are concerned.  How are your motor and ESC temps with the 14TP?  Also, did you change the the stock Scorpion motor connectors assuming you are using the HKIII 4025 1100KV?  If you didn't change them you should, change them to connector with more contact surface area and remove the "banana" plugs that were factory installed  your ESC will thank you.

Hey Rich thanks for the reply,

The Esc temps are peaking at 89C according to the logs, which i am a little unhappy with so I might drop to the 12 and see how it goes.

Also I have not changed the plugs on the Scorp or esc. What connectors do you suggest? Maybe EC5's with the slot instead of the springy contacts.

I am running a 12 tooth pinion myself with the 4025-1100 by Scorpion. Batteries come down just warm but haven't measured the ESC/Motor temps yet however I can touch them no problem and that's running 2100 to take off & land with 2250 for the flight.

I have used both types of EC5 connectors.  The EC5 connectors with the slits (http://www.progressiverc.com/ec5-connectors-2-pairs.html) seem to have more contact surface area than the springy type (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idproduct=9194).  I prefer the springy type.

The slit type initially can be very difficult to insert, as you have to center the male and female connectors correctly, and the connection is very tight.  However, overtime they seem to loosen up.

The springy type are easier to insert.  They are tight, but not tight enough to hurt your fingers whenever you try to pull the connectors apart.  They also do not seem to loosen up over time.

As far as the contact surface area concern, my Castle logs never show Ripple voltage over 4%, so I assume the springy type EC5 connectors are adequate enough for the application.

Guess I will stick with the 12t pinion thing.  Glad I didn't do anything last night with it.
I'm using the PRC6 connectors on the motor.

Everyone, check your set screw!  I was about to put mine back in and noticed it would not go "in" all the way.  As in it would screw to a certain point, then that was it.  I was sure it should go more so took it off the shaft and tried again after rinsing the pinion in alcohol and letting it dry.  It just barely protruded inside.  I think it should go in more so will examine this with more experienced eyes. I don't want to have the same situation happen twice.  Please everyone make sure it is making contact with your motor shaft.

You may want to try MrMel's Head Speed calculator, so that you can better match your pinion, motor Kv, and desired head speed.

I used the Scorpion 6.5mm bullets on the motor but, any quality bullet connector should work fine.  Your ESC temp will come down just from changing the motor connectors.  I haven't yet heard from anyone running the 13TP I may have to give it try just too see what happens.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I had some flights yeasterday with the 12 tooth, and dropped my headspeeds 100rpm to 2000,2100,2200 with the castle spitting out the warning @ 2200 but performs ok.
There did not appear to be any apparent difference in flight time, or temp but havent checked the logs and it was a hot day 37 degC.

I will definately pick up a 13 tooth pinion, however it flys smooth @ 2100rpm and i might get to like it.
I will also look at changing the bullet connectors but its a complete PITA and annoying!!
