Pitch range
« on: March 05, 2013, 11:43:59 PM »
I'd like to achieve a little more performance out of this impressive machine. I bumped things up from 11 +- to a little over 12 degrees (pitch) after 50 flights. Feeling comfortable with it now that I have 134 flights in and wanted to know what the pitch range is for this model.  I bumped the headspeed up to 2400 with the 12t pinion, but now that the warm weather is on its way I'd rather lower the headspeed to use less battery capacity which will result in a faster charge time, maybe go down to 2350, so not a major change.  But is it possible to have +-13 pitch or is that ill advised?  just would like a little better pop, tighter flip.  I know it is all about collective management, but with the 130x, 300x, and on the sim I can get some pretty tight flips so I know it isn't my skills.  But want to make sure it is ok and I won't run into any issues.

13* isn't too much.  I know someone running 15* and 2450 rpm on 556mains.  But he likes things to be nuts  8)

lower head speed and higher pitch will make bogging easier which will pull more amps and suck a bit more power.  Collective management is going to be your friend if you are trying to run "big" pitch on lower head speeds.

I am running 12.5 and 2200 headspeed.  I find this a perfect balance between flight time and preformance.  Plenty of pep in my opinion..

Cheers

I wasn't going to run a real low headspeed, but would 2300 be too low in your opinion?
Alan, I like the pop of 12.5, but have 2400 HS right now, so I want to lower that to get a little more flight time and control similar to my other helis.  But I tell you, on hurricanes and funnels, it performs incredible; tic tocs too, but just want a little tighter flip thats all.

So I will ask a continuing question about running with lower head speed......I am running 2100 and that seems to be fine at this time based on my flying style.

I have 12 degrees collective pitch and 10 degrees Aileron/Elevator pitch with the SK 540.  This seems to be plenty.  Am I where I should be, or would I benefit by having lower pitch ranges?  If so would this contribute to battery saving, or less responsiveness?

There is always a trade off between power and efficiency so you are both doing the right thing. That being said lowering head speed from 2400-2300 will only be slight but going to 2100 will be noticable. So it really depends on your style of flying. I run around 2300-2400 but only fly 3 1/2 min on 4400 packs. Yes I could run slightly longer but we suffer high heat in summer in Australia so I run them on the conservative side for logevity of packs. Long as you stay in the optimal ranges your doing fine.

I'm going to lower it to 2333 :) because it is around 75% less then 2400 but still higher than 2300. That way I can still have performance but also not wait 90 minutes for a battery to charge.  I just charge at 1c to keep problems from arising over time.  About to go into CC now and make the change.

Super tight flips today with the new settings.  I like it!  Better battery usage and still has power.  Actually fixed the very slight tail wag I had also my adjust the pitch slider length a hair.  Pleased with my new flip power...but also increased DR to 113
