Motor Shaft / Pinion Support Bearing

I'm working through an issue with my KDE motor shaft migrating out of the can and I'm wondering what how folks are locating their pinion on their motor shaft relative to the support bearing.  Although the manual doesn't specifically say, I try to slide the pinion down so it rests on the support bearing, thus providing some axial support for the shaft.  I'm obviously not getting the pinion on the bearing like I think I am since the motor shaft is able to migrate further down.  I've confirmed the pinion isn't sliding on the shaft.  Once it does settle on to the bearing I'm now seeing wear on the pinion where it rests on the bearing.

I obviously have some issues to sort out with the shaft migrating out of the motor can, but I'm wondering how other folks are locating their pinion relative to the support bearing, against the bearing or not?

I have mine resting on the bearing. No issues at this point.

Same here.  Resting on the bearing.  I tighten the pinion once both the motor plate and support bearing plate are tightened down.  I then loosen those screws and slide forward to set the mesh then retighten.  You may also need to pull up on the motor can and then push down on the bearing while tightening.  That depends on whether you have any end play in the motor shaft.  If you do pulling up on the motor can may take care of that.

With the KDE 600XF motors, you can adjust the amount of shaft slop with the brass collar.  My understanding is that you do not want visual slop, but want "some" up/down slop, where you just hear a "click" when jiggling the motor shaft up/down.

As far as the pinion to pinion support bearing relation, it is my understanding that helical pinions/gears benefit from the pinion lightly resting against the pinion support bearing, mainly to minimize axial stress on the motor bearings.

This is the reason Patrick sites in the KDE website why he does not recommend using helical gears on the T-Rex 550, since it does not use a pinion support bearing.

Thanks.  My collar is flush.  I'll add a click of backlash. 

I think my shaft migration problem was not using red loctite on the set screws.  I'll see how the flight goes tomorrow.

Another reason to have the Pinion pushed against the bearing is to ensure the bearing is actually turning with the motor shaft and the shaft not free spinning within the bearing.  I have seen some worn motor shafts due to this.

Red Loctite did the trick. Heli is quieter now also.

After what I had happen in January I pay careful attention to my pinion from time to time!
