Leaky tank
« on: July 07, 2013, 08:03:35 PM »
I just replaced all my lines, clunk, plunger, grommet, actual fuel tank. Because my old one leaked around grommet. After the new one darn thing leaks to. I try not to care but my heli is covered with fuel and running hz-r I worry about running lean. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? Despite this I still flew a gallon of fuel this weekend!

This seems like a basic question but the first part of my curiosity peaks wondering if it leaks during flight that you noticed and if not do you depressurize the fuel tank after your flights since you're running the regulated version?

If none if the above applies, me personally, I would rather just replace the tank before messing with grommets and sealers ETC.

No I do not believe it leaks during flight maybe a tad. Im getting decent flight times...I say a tad cause I feel like its a little more residue near the tank then there should be. Right before I depressurize I can see air escaping near the grommet.

Yes depressurize right after I land, during fuel up.i replaced everything last week, and the grommet is still not a tight seal. I would much prefer not to use any outside material on it.

Okay so the tank was replaced too and it still does it after a gallon. That is a bit perplexing since sometimes I've found the fuel makes the rubber swell up and seal right but it doesn't seemed to have done so on yours. Let me think about that a bit and see if someone else can pop in with a suggestion in the meantime as well so we can get your challenge taken care of.

Oh don't worry Brandon we will figure it out...she's still flying but just sketchy with hzr pressure and makes tuning harder. Regardless I can't stop flying my  n5c, awesome hel!

I would carefully remove the grommet and inspect for tares. They are very easy to tare and my friend had the exact same problem. Replaced the grommet again and he is good.

Also, while you have the grommet back out, check to make sure there aren't any defects or extra plastic hanging around the area the grommet seats.  If there is a rogue plastic chip from the drill that made the hole, that could be hindering the grommets ability to seal.

I had to use a trex 700 fuel tank grommet on my n5c to stop it leaking with an os 55 hzr.

100% stock tank and grommet with my OS 55HZ-R and by buddy's is the same way.  But I did have a plastic burr on mine around the hole, on the inside of the tank. Little trim of that burr and my grommet seats fine.

I tried new tank, and grommet, the only way I could stop the leak was to use the trex 700 one to get it tight.

Drew,
make sure you put alittle lube on the grommet when you install it. I have used a little bit of Dawn dish detergent. Worked Great. If you need a tank call me and I will send you one...

Pulled grommet, looked like no tares. Checked tank for abrasive spots around hole. All seems well, installed my old grommet see if that seals better. But this is the reason I replaced all the lines, tank etc. I made sure I was really easy when installing to try and get a better seal. Going to burn some fuel tomorrow, will update you guys. My older grommet feels tighter then my brand new one. But there is always the possibility I damaged it putting it in due to excitement.  ;D most likely the cause because I came home ripped open package installed it in fury and drove to field! Thanks for the suggestions

This right here usually cures all my leak issues when it's leaking near the grommet.

I have had main tanks and header tanks all leak until I pulled the tank grommet, lubed it up with a little tri flow grease and then set them back in.  Leaks gone.
