So, last week when I first got my N5c set up with the new Futaba gear, something strange happened on my third flight.  I was hovering inverted about 20 feet up.  I had been hovering for about 30 seconds when, out of the blue, the helicopter veers off as if I had given it negative collective and left aileron.  It ends up in the dirt and breaks one of my main blades.  I wrote it off as a wiring thing because I hadn't put shoe goo on the wires yet.

After securing the wires I got about 5 good flights in.  Yesterday afternoon, on my second flight, right after I took off I rolled it 90 degrees towards me and started to fly it away when it just went out of control again almost exactly like it had last weekend.  It was total DeJa Vu from my DX8 experience but this time it wasn't triggered by hitting a switch, or anything.  I'm at a total loss as to even where to start looking... this sucks!

I think what I'm going to do is go ahead and take the receiver and SK540 that are on the N5c right now and transfer them to my E5.  I want to install the CGY-750 on my N5c, anyway.  I'll also swap the receiver with the R7008SB, too, so I can use the temp sensor I bought.

I just have a bad feeling that I'm only going to be swapping a problem onto my E5 and will be flying a ticking time bomb. :(

This took quite a while to clean up...  Damage wasn't really bad.  One broken main blade but it did bend my exhaust, badly, to the point where I think I'm going to have to replace it too.  At least it was in a mint field so my helicopter is nice and minty smelling.

Sorry to hear that Rodney :(
Does the Skookum have any logging at all?  That would be a place to start. I will be interested to hear how the CGY750 does.  Was the Skookum used when you had issues with the DX8? Maybe not a transmitter/receiver issue?

Keep us posted.

Cheers

Rodney, if this is the same SK540 that you were having these issues with the DX8, then it has to be the SK. Or if it always fails rolling the same way, could be an aileron servo failing under load.

Sorry to hear about the exhaust pipe. I keep wondering when I might tank mine :( Lucky so far.

Personally, i would send that unit to SK before risking the E5 with it.

I'm going to send Skookum the log file and see if there's anything they can see.

Okay, screw this.  I think I better take a break from these damn things.

Flying the E7 yesterday and I was still tuning the SK540 because the gain values seem to need to be quite a bit different after the latest firmware update.  On my 5th flight (last battery of course) I had been upping the tail gain each flight because it kept coming around during fast backwards flight.  The last tweak I made seemed to have it pretty locked in, well, until I was fast and pretty low when it decided to swap ends.  It was heading down too fast for my brain to deal with the 180 degree orientation change so quickly.  Now I have another minty fresh helicopter.

On top of that... I received my replacement SK540 yesterday so this morning I installed it in my E5.  I plugged it into my PC to start setting it up and it's throwing two sensor errors. @#$!%^&*!  I mean, seriously, this is really starting to get on my nerves.

Wow that does suck. When I get I to slumps like these I usually just start fresh. Get rid of the electronic stuff that's giving me problems and then add stuff that's tried and true and most importantly for me is to leave it that way. I'm not big on changing stuff once I have things that work well anyway but if I'm having problems and then get into something that works, I leave it.

Just a thought to maybe get you some enjoyable airtime instead of all the frustrations you're understandably having.

Man that's a rough run of luck for sure.

I think I would replace those SK540s. Sounds like they have some tweaking to do with their software. I haven't heard too many overly happy people with them since they seem to have broken the gov.

If you want to try something else just to know for sure, I have an extra iKon I loan you to test with.

Taking a step back isn't always a bad idea either. We had some health issues with my so 2 years ago that forced me to downsize and take some time off. Probably the best thing for me. Came back clear and ready to do strong.

Hey Rodney.
Same offer as Chris but I have a spare mini VBar and a Helicommand Hc3-SX.  I would be willing to let you try either one.

Thanks for the kind words and offers, guys!  I've spent the last few hours going through the N5c, getting it all back up to snuff mechanically.  After I did that, I installed the CGY-750 and my 14ch receiver.  I installed a new backplate rpm sensor and I installed a temp sensor on the head of the motor.  I've been going through the CGY-750 setup and I think I've got my basic setup all done now, except for the governor, which will be next.

I'm super nervous about trying to fly it after setting up a new FBL controller that I have zero experience with.  I've been triple-checking that the rudder and swash move in the correct directions when tilting and rotating the heli around and through transmitter input and it all looks good to go.  I'm going to set up the governor, pound on my exhaust with a hammer enough to install it, and then maybe try a flight later.

BTW, there was one positive out of my crash the other day.  I just bought a brand new LE canopy for the N5c and I had it with me on the 4th but I put the stock one on.

Rodney.
If you would like to go through the settings over the phone let me know via PM.
We could just walk through the menus to see if everything sounds good.
The stock settings should be okay for the most part as long as everything is moving in the correct direction.

Cheers
Alan

I see you have a Dx8! I had a simmilar problem out at the field one day heli just piroed out of control with crash result.
Wondered what on earth was going on. Pots were replaced on recall some time ago. Went one sim couple days later
and same thing happened. Ok lights came on and made me look at moniter in Dx8, sure enough when moving elevator
tail went 100%. There should be no interaction of other imputs.Second time pot failed but quickly replaced by local dealer.
What I am saying is to check out radio just to make sure!

Thanks Shane.  I actually replaced my DX8 with a Futaba 14SG that I'm using now.  These last two crashes were eerily similar to what happened to me with the DX8 so it's thrown me into a pretty bad funk right now.
