13T or 14T pinion?
« on: October 08, 2013, 07:40:09 AM »
I am trying to decide whether to use the 13T or 14T pinion with my E5.

This is a 6S setup spinning Rail 556/96 blades.  CC EGE 120HV with KDE-1100Kv motor.  I will be using the VBar governor.  My HS range goal is 2,375rpm to 2,500rpm.  I am using the 1:4.0 tail ratio, so that HS range would yield the optimal 9,500rpm to 10,000rpm tail speed.

I plugged the numbers in the MrMel HS calculator, but it seems that either pinion will work.

Should I go with the 13T or the 14T pinion?

What C rating packs are you going to be using?

Based though on your desired HS range, the 14 tooth would be better suited.

Thanks for replying.

I am using 45C, 60C, and 65C packs;  4,400mah and 5,000mah sizes.

I am currently using the 13T pinion, and I don't notice any bogging at 2,406rpm HS.  However, Patrick recommended that I go up to the 14T pinion.  I really don't want to take the bird apart to install a new pinion, specially since it is currently flying so well.  However, I could use the 13T pinion on the E5s which is currently using the 12T pinion.

So, it seems that I will be removing the 13T from the E5 and install it on the E5s, and go with the 14T pinion on the E5.

Thanks!
