JB Weld...
« on: February 17, 2014, 04:54:43 PM »
I used JB Weld for various items on my E5...
After crashing my E5 a couple of weeks ago, parts broke next to the JB Weld joining but the weld held fast.
So then I thought I would separate some of the components.
The parts did come apart, but it took a heat gun on max and some time...

I will definitely continue to use JB Weld.

Good to know. The other thing I like about JB Weld is that it does not dry instantly therefore you have time to align your parts properly before the glue sets.

I second the JB Weld.  I get it at Home Depot.

I use JB Weld exclusively on (1) the boom support rods ends and (2) the tail push rod ends.  Any other uses I should know about?

That's where I had it... I had a major blade strike that severed the boom, torq tube, both boom supports and the tail pushrod.
On the boom supports three of the four end broke JB Weld held
On the tail pushrod the servo arm broke on one end and the tail bell crank on the other but the JB Weld held

I mix the JB Weld in a small 1 oz (30mm) medicine cup, and stir it with either chop sticks or coffee stirrers from Starbucks (yes, I grab a few extras).  How do you guys mix it?

Only thing I will use, As long as it's mixed 1.1 your good to go,  word of advise, always keep it in a warm place like inside if it's cold outside, Mixes and cures Better... I always set mine on top of our big Hutch up high.. Also make sure you sand the carbon and clean with contact cleaner or a good solvent that will evaporate. And last but not least... Make this the first step when building your new Kit, when you get to that step in the Manual for installation, it's already done and your build will (Flow).   Good Post!    I've seen many people use Epoxy and end up crashing due to (bonding failures).

I agree with your epoxy statement.
I used first CA and later epoxy for the boom support ends on my Beam E4 and the ends came off with either in mild impacts.

I have gotten held up twice by this and when my N7 gets here on Thursday it will be first on my list.  Jbweld once saved a company ten hundred million dollars when the mechanic patched a hole on the engine block of a C-5 galaxy..................  Not sure if you all have heard that story  :D

I score the CF rods with a file and clean off the CF dust with a rag and denatured alcohol before applying the JB Weld.

After applying the JB Weld, I keep tension with electrical tape overnight.  This prevents the tips from separating from the CF rod before the JB Weld cures.

I also do the scoring of the carbon rod but I am using Hysol 9462 adhesive.  Strongest stuff I have ever used.

Cheers
