Broken clutch???
« on: July 22, 2014, 08:50:18 PM »
Scratching my head on this one. What would cause this mess??
Hobbico 180 starter with JR starter wand.
Used a few drops of trans fluid during assemble.
Starter shaft looks clean and spins smooth.
1 1/2 gallons on OS 105hz

Hi Chips,

Thats very peculiar, was the clutch stack and clutch spinning freely with no undue stresses or friction in the assembly?

There appears to be some damage/metal inside the clutch bell inself, which could be from the seperation of the clutch shoe. Did this happen during flight or on the ground?

Cheers,
Ross

I never seen or felt any rubbing between the clutch or the clutch bell. Spin freely
Last flight, did a small auto. Seemed like the motor wouldn't turn off till the blades stopped. My thoughts it broke in flight.
When I hit it with starter again, it snap everything loose and I lost the one way bearing to turn the motor over. Than the clutch bell was rubbing on something.

How tight where your clutch bolts? I have seen this on my N5c and was due to me torquing it to tight. I broke 3 of them and each time was about gallon each time. Not saying you have the same issue but I wouldn't monkey them down....🐒

I'd just replace the liner with a new one and be done with it.  No need to buy a whole new clutch bell (at least I can see nothing in the pic that would warrant replacement.)

Good luck!

Chips, I don't think you need a new bell, but hit me up in PM if you get desperate for something you can't find ... I took my stock temporarily offline as I transition our business to a new domain / site, but I might have that bell assembly in stock if no one else has near you.

I am going to be checking my N5 for a similar issue where the starter clutch will "slip' sometimes when I go to start the motor.  Gonna pull it and check the bolts, etc.

One question related to this is do you have to oil anything in this assembly and if so how much and where?

Sorry for the newb question.... ;)

When doing the initial installation, oil can be use to purge the grease that is packed in the NEW one-way bearing.
If I were doing engine maintenance and had the clutch in my hand, I might oil it back just to get possible debris out of the one-way using a good  amount of oil (tri-flow, transmission oil) and letting in drip overnight.

Lastly, this could also be the cause for your occasional slip (grease still in the one-way), but it can also be the one-way is shot.

Thanks!  I will be pulling it apart this week.  :)
