Gear chatter on an E7SE
« on: October 05, 2014, 03:43:34 PM »
I just bought and set up a used E7SE. I equipped it with an Xera 4530-500 motor with a 13 tooth pinion, Castle edge 120 hv, torque 9180 cyclic, torque 9188 tail and AR7200BX gyro. I am running 12S with rail 716 mains and rail 106 tails at about 1950 head speed.

I'm hearing what sounds like gear chatter when using left rudder in a turn or when unloading the disc. If i increase collective or input right rudder, the noise goes away. I have adjusted the governor and tail gains down and up with no change in the noise. I have changed both spur gears and both bevel gears at the front transmission. The rear bevel gears look good.

Has anyone had this problem? Any suggestions where to look? Thank you Leon

Sounds like castle gov chatter. Where is your gov gain?

I agree with Chris. And i've experienced similar before. Try completely disabling your governor temporarily. I bet you will find the noise is gone. If not, then there's no need chasing ghosts by adjusting gov gains. If so, then you can continue to experiment with different gov gains to see which setting minimizes the noise. If it's gov related, you might not be able to completely eliminate it.

If you have changed out gears and know that all is good then experiment with gov gains. Do you or can you make a vid so that we can see what's going on with the heli.

The castle Gov is very hard on the tail gears. I have had to lower my gain to 8 and 10 to get rid of this chatter in the past.  Makes for some good collective management training :)

i fly all of my Castle ESC's at a gov gain from 7-9. no higher. their gov is very good, and doesnt need to be turned up very high.

with my scorpion motors, i ran it around 10, with the KDE motors, i had to drop it a little.

it is actually much more fun to fly with the "softer" gov feel IMO, makes  you a better pilot.

Thank you for the responds. I will try to lower the gov gain and even turn off gov. This same set up on another heli, i ran 15 on gov gain with no problem. I hope this is all that is needed. Leon

Sorry it's been a while, just been trying different things and just flying. I tried lowering my gov gain in steps down to 8 with no change in the noise. I replaced the crown gears in the front transmission and rear tail box, still had, what i thought, was to much play between the gears. I bought some shims and shimmed the gears until i got all the play out of the gears and they still ran smooth. I flew the heli today 4 times and the noise was gone, even with the gov gain set at 15 on the Castle esc. I even changed the esc, not because of the noise, but because the esc was running about 190 deg on a flight. I put in an edge 160 with a fan and the temp is down to about 120 deg. Thank you guys for the help.
