N5C TT Headspeed

Hi guys. I just finished my first nitro build.. First Synergy as well. I plan to start the break-in with the maiden tomorrow. Break-in will be a linear normal, 80-75-80 idle1, & 95-90-95 idle2(V-curves on the idle ups). Alternate suggestions welcome.  Now I know I need to get about a gallon thru her before I program in my desired governed headspeeds.. But I'd like to get an idea as I can't find any sort of calculator for nitro setups as I use for my electric models. So as stated iv got the N5C TT, OS 55HZ-R, Hatori SAB-55, & iKon. I will be using the internal gov of the iKon.  When I set up the gov I'd like to run it as my electrics.. No normal.. Idle1, idle2, & idle3... Giving me 3 full speeds to use. Anyhow.. Curious what u guys are running for headspeeds.. And any tips would be greatly appreciated as this is my first dive in nitro... Confident in my build but feeling a little spook'd.. Never flown nitro before. Thanks in advance.

When I first setup my n5c I had 1950,2050,2150. Same setup except use vbar. Now I just use 2050,2150 with a normal.

i fly mine at 1950 and 2150. the difference between 2050 and 2150 was a little too small for me, the difference between 1950 and 2150 is sufficient. i may later try 2200 and 2250 just to see how it feels, but that is approaching the max rpm of the motor in its stock form.

I'm running 1950,2000,2050
Calculating  head speed on a nitro involves running your engine in its optimum rpm for horsepower.
Example: OS50 and OS55 put out their optimum horsepower at 17k rpm. Your N5c in its stock form has a gear ratio of 8.5:1. In order to be in the ball park you need to run a head speed of 2000 rpm to be in the  rpm range of the engine. Now I say ball park because many factors like what pipe you use will affect the optimum rpm on the engine. Starting in the range that is documented for the engine is a good point and then working from there 50 rpm at a time is usually a great way to find the head speed you need to run. Try both up and down. It is always beneficial, as you may find a sweet spot where the engine is "on the pipe" and everything is perfect along with no vibes.

Forgot to put in the bit warning you about your throttle curves.  I know the ikon will provide a slow start to your speeds but you can not run a nitro model without a normal mode in your non governed mode. If you were to spin the model up in an idle up position it would go to full speed as there is not slow start on an engine. Another point would be if your governor quit working and you had no normal mode you would have a straight throttle curve and you will probably blow the engine from over speed. I recommend a normal curve that is non governed and set the head speed manually.

You can run the gov on the Ikon during break in. You can start out with a 0 30 30 30 , then 70 70 70, and 100, 100, 100. Then set your head speed in the Ikon gov. You won't have a problem breaking in the 55hz-r with a governor. That way you will know your head speed and not over rev the engine.

Got about a half gallon thru her.. But here's a clip of one of the first flights.. Skip to about 2 minutes in.. Gotta get a editor for my iPhone... Takes a minute to rig the phone on my hat.. Then I forgot to un-clip the fuel line to the carb and hat to restart the motor... Lol.. I'll get the hang of it soon.
