Clutch Stack Build Q and Engine Mounting?
« on: May 11, 2015, 06:06:34 AM »
Hi Guys,

I have a question regarding the build of the clutch stack on the N7.  The manual states that the helical pinion is "factory installed"

At the time, I took this to mean that it has been pre-threadlocked etc at the factory. When I build the clutch stack, I simply pulled the top cap off with the 2x M2.5x6 socket head screws, saw the top nut was in place, checked the tightness and then re-installed the top cap with threadlock.

Do I need to strip it all down again to put red threadlock on the helical pinion?  This build thread doesn't appear to show any kind of factory installed thread lock on the pinion, but I don't know if the kits have changed over time

My second question is, are there any parts available to space the engine from the mounts, should I need it? I have been unable to find any N9 engine spacers.  Some people have reported needing to space the engine from the mounts 0.5 - 1.0mm to get the gear mesh correct and the clutch stack properly aligned with the engine itself.

My engine is an OS105HZ-R.

Thanks!

Hello!

Depending on how old your kit is, it should have come with the engine spacers.  If not shoot Matt and email at matt@mattbotos.com I am sure he can round some up for you.

As for the pinion, mine wasn't loctited, you for sure need to make sure the nut under the cap is loctited.  As for the clutch bell to the pinion, the direction of the engine rotation is always applying tightening force on those threads.  It can't come out :)

Welcome to the N7 family :) Can't wait to hear how you like the maiden!

Hey and thanks for the response! Which bag should the engine spacers be in?

I don't see them but its entirely possible that I've missed them in the multitude of bags. What do they look like, do you have a photograph?

I'm looking forward to the maiden too, wanted one of these heli's for a long time now!

Honestly not sure what bag they are in as mine was a pre-production kit and didn't have them..  But they look like this:

They are thin, less than a MM thick.  Basically washers that go between the engine and the motor mount to set proper mesh.  Some motors need them, some don't.

Just make sure when you are done that you have the clutch stack perfectly straight with the motor shaft.  Can get some nasty vibs if it's tilted.
