I know I could experiment, but I thought someone may have tried a few and had some suggestions.

When it blows out, I am pushing it very hard.

I would like a setup that I don't have to hold back, if I want to go ballistic it can take it.

Thanks

I ran 12cell 556 main and 96 tail blades at 2300hs.  With the speed up tail gear I never had the tail not hold

What headspeed? What tail gear ratio? What flybarless system? What servo?

  • If it's not broke, try harder?

On 12s as a 550, You might have a hard time clearing it up but go to the 4:5 and 106's. That should help! Change the 52t gear out with a 54t (320-154).  Tail servo/FBL unit and free-ness of linkage will also play a role. At my altitude(600+asl) I went to the 4:9 ratio and 106's. Most of the e5's out here are running the 4:5 or 4:9 and 96's though. Just as a precaution, if you decide to go to the 4:9 you may not want to go over 2300 head speed as the tail will be turning greater than 11,000 RPM.

Will I also need a longer tail boom?
I am not afraid to cut down a boom and a TT.
Just want to make sure running 556's I have clearance.
Thanks

As I said above on my 12s e5 556mm setup I simply ran the speed up tail gears at 2300hs with no issues with the tail.  I prefer the stretch but have flown mine on 12s with 556mm mains for a bit over a year with no tail authority issues.  5min flight times landing at storage charge.

Sk540 and savox servos.

Rpm is key regarding the tail. It's not always a function of blade size, more importantly speed. The 96s will hold on a 556 e5 with any motor and collective setting, as long as they are near 10k rpm and the servo speed/gain is optimized. 4.0 x 2500rpm is the recommended setup, so at 2300 you'd only need the 4.5 ratio or 106s, not both. Hope this helps.
