Opening up the hole slightly will make the inserts slide easier and combined with some silicone grease they will function smooth.
No doubt this canopy style is a little different. But after a few cycles I find mine no more difficult than my N7.

When I reamed the holes in mine for the grommets, I started at 8mm but it was still a bit of a challenge to get the connectors lined up easily. I ended up reaming them out to about 9mm and they go in quite a bit smoother now.
