696 with old JR servos?
« on: December 21, 2019, 08:25:49 PM »
I have an old set of servos *barely used* I'm wondering will be okay on the 696. I put them on a 600 model shortly before I had to hang the hobby up ~10 or 12 years ago. They probably only have 30 flights on them. No crashes or hard flying.

The cyclics are JR DS8717. Link to Specs: https://servodatabase.com/servo/jr/ds8717

Torque:
4.8V: 160.00 oz-in (11.52 kg-cm)
6.0V: 196.00 oz-in (14.11 kg-cm)
Speed:
4.8V: 0.09 sec/60°
6.0V: 0.07 sec/60°

The tail is a JR DS8900G. I assume it's an automatic no-go as it only runs on 4.8V. This was before flybarless machines were standard and the gyro only controlled the tail servo. It was the fastest servo back then!

I'm open to any ideas or thoughts about them. If I have to get new servos, so be it. It's just a shame to see them mounted on a decommissioned model.

How are you powering the servos? Battery or BEC?
Those cyclics will be fine. I am running Futaba HC500’s which have close to the same torque.
As long as you aren’t Tareq you are good to go :-)
The tail servo as well if you use a voltage regulator inline.
Cheers

Im actually using those exact servos in an E7, so in my opinion they will work fine in the 696 on regulated voltage. The 696 is very light, and doesn't require super high torque servos. Regarding the tail servo, You would need to step down the voltage. If it were me I would use a servo capable of running on the same voltage as the cyclics. That way you can set your bec to 6v for everything. Also pretty much all tail servos nowadays run at 333 mhz or higher, i ran into an issue with a particular fbl unit that could not be turned down enough to run an older servo that was only capable of 200mhz i think, and it overheated. Plus the torque rating on your jr is low by todays standards and has a plastic output gear. I would save that servo for another project 😁

Hope this helps!

That is good news. Thank you guys!

I'll be using the HW130 BEC. Likely just replace the tail servo and put the extra savings towards a good one and upgrade the others when I'm at Tareq's level... haha. That'll never happen! I noticed he even uses aluminum horns.

I wasn't going to put the whole thing together until after winter but I'll probably just move forward with everything at once now. Getting excited!

I know the feeling! Congrats on your new heli, if you've built any synergy kits in the past you will find this build goes very smooth and fast. Its an amazing heli. Enjoy!!

Thanks! This will be my second Synergy and my first 700... and my first torque tube tail!
