What is the purpose of this tapped top hole on the boom clamps?  Pin the boom?

Yes. As an option. I don’t and never had an issue.
Cheers

I've heard of people over tightening there and cracking booms. At least carbon ones if memory serves.

I won't be using them until I see a need. The wide surface on the clamps is a good design.

I've pinned all my models except my 516, due to possibly having to move the boom to tighten the belt.

The belt is adjusted at the tail case. I would avoid adjusting at the clamps as you could lose some contact surface. The boom should remain flush with the front edge of the front clamp. Feel free to pin it!

You're right.  I was tired when I wrote that.  I should have went and looked at it.   8)
