Talk me into nitro!

I'm an electric guy. I would love to dive into Nitro - Tell me I should.

I think I've been intimidated for no reason. I love engines, I rebuilt my car's engine top to bottom and slapped a turbo on, swapped the transmission, rear end, drive line, etc., etc.. I know how engines work inside and out... why should I be flying a Nitro helicopter?

Two years ago I bought my first nitro a goblin black nitro, I built it and thought man what I have done.  I don’t even like the way this looks never mind the headaches involved and I tried to sell it.   I was getting offers so low I would have just let it sit on a shelf so I decided to fly it.  Instant connection instant joy.   It’s essentially a standard goblin with. Different power system yet it flew very differently I have a hard time putting it into words but it’s just sweet.

Fast forward today.   About to put my last two electrics for sale synergy n556 and align 600.  Align 700 and brand new synergy N7 is on route !   I am patient and open minded but I don’t enjoy the electric flying anymore.  Too digital.   Too much instant torque.  It’s more of an old school modellers toy an internal combustion  heli.  The power is way less but if you’re like me and you don’t use all the electric power anyways this flies better !

Thank You for the info! You explained it perfectly and with humor!

So, I took a break from heli's and am finally back into it. My first go-around, I learned too much too quick and never really mastered the basics. After flying a new 516, I'm thinking the nitro 556 might have been better for more intuitive practice.

Time will tell what I decide. So far I've only logged 2.5 hours with the 516 but seriously look forward to every moment I get with it.

p.s.: I think SAB makes amazing machines and they're very well built but, I agree, I don't like the way they look, haha!

Did you pull the trigger on a 556 yet. The 516 is a great machine but I can assure you if you decide to go nitro then the N556 Stretched is the best choice. When properly set up and tuned it's an amazing heli and especially lite when flying as a 606. Good luck and look forward to hearing what you decide.

I have not pulled the trigger yet. Only watched videos and studied the manual so far. Still in the back of my mind for sure. With the abrupt winter weather, I decided to hang up flying for the season. LiPo's are on storage voltage, etc...

With that said, are there advantages to nitro in the cold? I assume a couple clicks for tuning and keeping the battery warm but anything else?

Also, is LiPo strictly recommended for the RX battery or are people running Ni-MH or NiCd?

It’s been quite some time since I have seen anyone run a nicad or NiMh. . Lipos or LiFe packs are the common choices.

Your kidding rt? Ok, the biggest hang up people have with nitro is they dont understand internal combustion engines and/or have no clue how to tune one. You on the other hand, know how to break in and and tune engines. Its more of listening to it then watching a wide band but no big deal.

Whats a nitro day like? Well, charge your rx pack, normally just one but some setups you may want 2. Load it up and head to the field. Yes, only 30-60mins of charging and your ready. If you get a 55 size then fuel up, hit the push glow, spin it and when she idles go set it down for a 5 to 6 min flight. You get about 15 flights/gallon. My older setup I could fly a gallon on a single charge of my 2200 mah rx pack.
700 nitro is even better. The motors have gobs of power, start and idle great compared to the little motor witch is still pretty good. 7 to 8 min fights and 7 or 8 tank/ gallon. 6 flights is all I would push my 3500mah rx pack before charging. Starter battery gets charged once, maybe twice a yr. Yes the 700 is thirsty but, understandable with the power differents.

My electric days were 3 hrs charge time to get 6 3min fights.

Well to defend electrics it takes me about 15 minutes to charge a 6 or 12s pack.
Nitro is definitely the way to go to get numerous flights in a short period of time. I usually get 3 flights between any charging on nitros. Keep a spare pack charged as well.
Tuning can be an art but is not that daunting really.
