OWB install upside down?
« on: January 27, 2013, 11:59:59 AM »
Hey guys, after introducing myself yesterday, I have come upon a bit of a snag, I think.
I temporarily installed the main gear, main shaft, and belt pulley so I could get my engine/clutch
assembly lined up properly. I installed the main gear as shown in the manual, with the auto hub coming in from the bottom of the gear, and the button head screws down from the top of the gear. Installed this way, the owb lets the shaft free-wheel counter-clockwise instead of CW.

I've looked at it and measured pretty carefully, and it appears that the hub is centered in the main gear vertically, so that it doesn't matter which way the hub is installed. I installed the gear the other way, i.e. hub flange on top of the gear and screws from the bottom, and it looks
like everything lines up fine. The main gear is centered on the pinion gear, and the belt pulley
lines up with the belt tensioner pulleys. My concern is if there are any vertical loads when flying
that would stress the assembly if installed this way.

So, should I just install the main gear/auto hub upside down, or go ahead and press the owb
out and re-install it. I don't have a press available, although I've done it before using a vise,
blocks of wood, and appropriate size sockets.

thanks for any advice.

Actually the main gear and autohub can be installed either way. If you check out the tips and tricks section of this forum there are some great tips including an explanation on the owb.

You do not want to attempt to remove the one way clutch from the assembly as irreversible damage may result. Check out page 39 of the manual. You can flip the assembly if the one way bearing is installed opposite of what the original diagram shows.

Ah, ok, thanks. My manual must be V1, just saw the v2 version here and it does show it works either way.

You may be using a V1 manual if you're using the hard copy that came in the kit. The online version is more up to date. Let us know if you run into anything else.
