Drift in hover

We finally got some decent weather here in Minnesota this weekend, so I was able to maiden my E5.  In a hover the nose keeps drifting to the left.  I am running the AR7200BX FBL controller.  I played with gyro gain, but the drift is still there.  I double checked my radio setting in order to assure that no trim has been added (there is none).  Any suggestions for things to check?  Otherwise it is a great helicopter, not that I expected anything else from a Synergy.

Your sure your in heading lock mode and not rate mode?

I had the same issue on my E7 (vbar). Was a very slow CCW drift. Changed to a firmer tape and was good.

Yes, I am sure I am in head locking mode (blue light, several different gain settings corresponding to lights G, H, & I (also tried lights D, E, & F)).  I am using 3M 411 tape for mounting, any suggestions for another tape?

Can you give us a few details on your setup? Tail servo, blades, head speed, all can have an effect.

Tail servo is a Futaba HV256, and blades are Rail 96mm.  Motor is a Scorpion 4025-1100 (6s) with the 12 tooth pinion.  I will have to look at the CC log to verify the head speed, but it was just in a hover ~10 feet in the air.  Thanks for the help!

That is a nice setup :)

Well, tail issues can be simple, or they can be involved.

Anytime I have a tail issue of any kind I first check the mechanical setup.  Make sure the tail pitch slider is moving effortlessly.  Check for binding in the grips.  One place i have seen issues a lot lately is in the Teflon shrink on the tail control rod. If it isn't completely shrunk onto the rod, or has air bubbles this can cause binding.

Take the control rod off the servo ball.  how freely does the control rod and tail slider move? You should be able to hold the heli vertical and the weight of the control rod be enough to move the slider. I am ok if it takes a slight shake to break friction, but it shouldn't be tough.

I am also curious what your Parameters menu D is at. The default should be Red or medium. Might try bumping that up one and trying gain adjustments again.

Vibrations are another possible factor.  The BeastX likes to be mounted hard, i have seen guys actually use a zip tie to hold them down, just put fuel tubing over the zip tie so you don't damage the case.

I will triple check for binding this evening as you described.  I changed parameter D to "very low" as I was getting a very mild tail wag at "medium."  I am also going to double check that the thrust bearings are installed correctly in the tail.

Well if it is hunting or drifting, try moving the D up to medium then adjusting the tail gain again.

Thanks again Chris.  That was my starting point, tried several gain settings on medium, but could not get rid of the tail wag.  Just seems strange that it wants to drift CCW as it is very stable/precise otherwise.  Tail wag is practically gone on very low.

My gut keeps saying vibration. Have you tried spinning it up on the bench with no blades to check the drive train for vibs? Doesn't take much. The TT transmission could be tight, a little CA on the TT bearing, it's not hard to do really.

I just had this issue on my e6 and changed the bearing block bearing and all was good. I run the BX7200...
