Scorpion 5020-450
« on: October 13, 2011, 06:32:57 AM »
Hi,

My E7 with Scorpion 5020-450 has arrived :)

Firstly I am very impressed with the quality of this heli. The quality of the carbon and machined parts are excellent. I also like the way it is packaged as partially built, so no hunting for screws from a random selection - just unscrew the the part as is and rebuild with loctite

I knew the Scorpion 5020-450 would be a tight fit between the frames so i wanted to test fit it early on in the build.  It does fit between the frames just, BUT only with a 15 tooth pinion (without slight modification). With the 14tooth and presumbably 13 and 12 it will hit the centre main shaft bearing mount. With the 14th I thought it fitted initially, but it does just rub with a tight gear mesh. I just plan to file down this mount slightly, which won't affect the rigidity of the heli at all. I will probably take ~2mm off it to allow use of a 13th pinion. This is obviously best done before you build it!

Regards

Kevin

Wow! That is a HUGE motor! I can't wait to hear your reports on how it works. I know a bunch of guys including Kyle Stacy running the 520kv LE motor but I haven't seen anyone try this.... Keep us informed!

I was using same motor in my Logo 600se, great motor. Glad it does fit, after all. Very durable bearings and good torque.

I will let you know how it goes.

This is the mod I had to do - just careful use of a sharp file

We have a number of guys using the 5025-440 KV's over here.  To have them fit using all pinions some minor amount of material must be removed off the bearing blocks but nothing that a good dremel cannot do.

Should have one flying next week with one installed.  If you think that motor is crazy, i have a customer that has just ordered the latest Scorpion Limited 4535 - a massive 11HP - get out of town with that one!
